Eating/Feeding

FD was a very good eater 7 months ago when she first came to live with us but has progressively gotten pickier to the point where she barely eats now.  She is on a high fat/protein diet for her FTT but refuses to eat most of the time.  The weird thing is that she eats with gusto (feeds herself or accepts us feeding her) when we are in public places or at other peoples houses but at home she sits at the table not moving to eat or when she/we put food in her mouth she will hold it there, not chewing and sometimes eventually vomiting.

The only food she shows a preference for is blueberries, everything else is fair game for rejection although any given food can be fine at times and not at others.

I don't know what to do anymore, meals are so stressful these days.  Any advice for this mealtime battle weary mama?

Re: Eating/Feeding

  • How old is the child? Does your Pediatrician have anybody he can refer you to for help? This type of situation is definitely stressful. My son was seen by a Multi-discipline Feeding Clinic run by a Developmental Pediatrician and including a Speech Therapist that focuses on feeding skills, Dietician, etc. The team was through our local Children's Hospital. They certainly didn't have all the answers but had a lot of ideas and creative approaches. It seems like the child should qualify for something like this (assuming it exists in your area) as you mentioned FTT. I hope you can get some support soon. Hugs and GL!

  • If possible I would get a referral to feeding therapy don't wait.  Best thing I ever did for my son!  I would just google outpatient pediatric rehab/feeding therapy in my area to find one.  See who takes your insurance etc and start the process.  It takes a good deal of stress off of you to let them handle it.
