A few questions about doublers

I am building up my stash and I know I'll probably need doublers, but I have a few questions

When do you usually start using doublers, do newborns usually need a doubler?

Do you really have to buy doublers in small and large sizes or can you just get large and fold it over or something. It just seems like the cost could really add up.

Can you use GMD prefolds as doublers. I have a bunch of infant and size smalls. When he grows out of them could they still work as doublers or would I need to buy more in a larger size?

Are there different inserts that work best during the day versus ones that are better for night time?

Overall how many doublers do you need if you plan on doing laundry every other day?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks so much for your help.

Re: A few questions about doublers

  • When do you usually start using doublers, do newborns usually need a doubler? I started using doublers when DD was about 4 months old and became a very heavy wetter.  I still use them regularly now at 19 months.

Do you really have to buy doublers in small and large sizes or can you just get large and fold it over or something. It just seems like the cost could really add up. I purchased them as needed.  I have some smaller size and some larger size.  I tend to prefer smaller sizes because they're a bit less bulky and fit better in a range of CDs in my stash.  But that's just my experience.  You can fold larger sizes if you wanted.

Can you use GMD prefolds as doublers. I have a bunch of infant and size smalls. When he grows out of them could they still work as doublers or would I need to buy more in a larger size? I haven't, but I know many people do.  I think most people tend to use their nb and small sizes as doublers, but I'm not sure.

Are there different inserts that work best during the day versus ones that are better for night time? IMO, the best to use day or night are natural fibers - hemp and bamboo.  Super absorbent, trim, and less prone to compression leaks.

Overall how many doublers do you need if you plan on doing laundry every other day? I don't know how many I have.  You may not need them in every diaper you use...I probably use them in about half of the diapers DD wears on a regular basis.  I just bought as needed because it was easier that way for me.

When do you usually start using doublers, do newborns usually need a doubler? No idea, we started CDing just before 6 months.

Do you really have to buy doublers in small and large sizes or can you just get large and fold it over or something. It just seems like the cost could really add up. Many of my CDs came with doublers so I've just used those. I have only bought 1 pack of Lollido organic inserts extra to what came with my CDs

Can you use GMD prefolds as doublers. I have a bunch of infant and size smalls. When he grows out of them could they still work as doublers or would I need to buy more in a larger size? I'm sure you could, it'd be bulky but could be  a good choice for overnight

Are there different inserts that work best during the day versus ones that are better for night time? I don't use 2 inserts during the day except for my FB Elite OS, and I just use the two the dipe came with. For overnight I use a BG4.0 with the 2 inserts it came with and Imagines with the insert it came with along with the Lollidos.

Overall how many doublers do you need if you plan on doing laundry every other day? You really don't need to buy extra if you have at least a few brands that come with 2 inserts (BG, FB, Blueberry/Econappi, GroVia)

Sorry for all the questions, thanks so much for your help.

  • My plan is to start with just some smaller doublers and then see if we can get away with using newborn prefolds for extra absorbency later on. Basically I haven't bought any larger doublers yet because I want to see what our needs will be. We're only doing prefolds for the most part due to cost and ease of drying.
