Anyone make their own ring sling?

My bff is having her shower this weekend for her first baby.  I bought her a stroller but was also thinking about getting her a ring sling.  I went to their website and saw that they have instructions for making your own.  If you made your own, did you buy the rings though a company like Ring Sling or did you find rings some place else.  Any recommendations for fabric that worked well?

Re: Anyone make their own ring sling?

  • Sling rings are for babywearing, most others are not.  You really don't want to chance it by using rings that aren't weight bearing!

  • Yes, I made mine and have made some for others.  Here is the website I used for my pattern: https://lifemoresimply.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-make-ring-sling.html

And yes, I use rings from ring slings.  I use the aluminum ones.  They do not scratch or chip, are safe for LO to chew on, and can hold weight.

I used cotton for mine.  HTH! :)

  • I made a sling for DD1, before I really knew what I was doing.  I used some pretty shoddy, poor quality rings (because really, I didn't know any better!)  I was always a little uneasy about using it, but it worked well enough.  When she was about six months old, I got a better carrier.  However, I learned more and then completely re-made my first ring sling.  I used aluminum rings from ring slings.  I am so much more comfortable with this sling...It works better and I know that it is safe.
  • I made my own using this tutorial, rings from Sling Rings, and 100% linen fabric that I got on sale for $3.99/yd at Hobby Lobby over Memorial Day. Definitely get good rings and good fabric. You want it to be sturdy. Linen is very breathable and beautiful.

  • The only other rings that are safe and readily available are horse tack rings (like, for gear a horse would wear). And they are heavy, whereas Sling Rings are light.

My sling is 2 layers of cotton sewn together (butterflies on one side, plain on the other) with pockets on the bottom of the tail. The pockets are really handy - if you make one, add pockets. Mine just close with a bit of velcro. Great to throw a wallet and a diaper in.

  • I love the pocket idea! Thanks ladies!  I don't think I'll have time to make it for the shower since I haven't ordered the rings yet, so maybe I'll make it as a gift for when she actually has the baby.  I didn't use a ring sling the first time around (I went with a Moby and a Beco) but really want to next time.  My friend is currently registered for a super cheap baby carrier and I have a feeling she will find it uncomfortable.  I figure this can be a back up.
