Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sleeping position

So lately our LO has been sleeping on his hands and knees head turned to one side on the mattress. As he falls into deeper sleep he lowers onto his elbows and forearms. It's really cute but what we can't fathom is why when he is awake he refuses to be on his hands and knees. As soon as I put him there he lays bakc down on his belly and army crawls or rolls to what he wants. Does this new sleep position mean he's learning how to do it. We're waiting anxiously for him to start crawling and am hoping this is a sign of whats soon to come

Re: Sleeping position

  • He's not crawling? Some babies don't crawl and just go straight to walking, so maybe he will skip that milestone. My LO will sleep on his hands and knees with his but in the air, but he can also crawl. Sometime he is flat on his stomach too. I think however they are comfortable is how they will sleep, it probably doesn't have anything to do with crawling though.

  • My baby is crawling, but we have carpet. Do you happen to have something other than carpet? Sometimes it's just easier for them to get around in other ways! I wouldn't worry about it as long as he's able to get around and shows that interest :)

  • My daughter has slept like that for months. The doctor said it's nothing to be worried about as long as he/she can roll over easily.

  • My baby has slept like that ( butt in the air) since he started rolling over on his tummy. I dont think it has anything to do with crawling. But I might be wrong. LO started crawling at 6 months and walking at 9. He has been walking for 3 months now and he still sleeps like that.

  • DS sleeps like that all the time. He was an early crawler (still prefers the commando crawl even though he can get up on his hands and knees just fine...talk about rug burns!)  We started putting favorite toys just out of reach during tummy time when he started to act like he wanted to crawl (it took him a while to get all the coordinated maneuvers in play). It finally took me accidentally leaving my iPad at the other end of the couch for him to get going. Wouldn't crawl to Mama, Wouldn't crawl to Daddy. But man, did he scoot for that iPad!
