Babies: 3 - 6 Months

swim diapers (warning: possible stupid ?)

I took LO swimming for the first time last weekend in my Aunts pool and in preparation for the occasion, I bought a reusable swim diaper.  I put it on LO under her swimsuit and on the way out to the pool she peed and it went all over me as I was carrying her! I was wondering if I should switch to a disposable swim diaper... do they hold urine?

The next time we went swimming I kept her in a regular diaper and then changed her right before I was ready to get in the water and then changed her pretty quickly after we got out.  What do you ladies do?

I've heard that they don't hold urine.  I used one on DS last weekend.  It didn't leak, but maybe he didn't pee.

  • I use a re-usable one on DS, and my friend uses disposables on her babies. When we lifted her son out of the carseat last time, he had peed everywhere. She confirmed the swim diapers don't hold pee, only poop!

I now change DS when we get to the pool, especially since we usually walk over there and I don't want him to pee in his stroller.

  • Swim diapers, both cloth & disposable, are not designed to hold pee just solids which is why they don't swell up. We just keep DS in his regular diaper until we're ready to get in then change him into the swim one and vice versa once we're done.

    Yep, they only hold poop.

We don't put them on until we're headed into the water.  I'd just pack the bathing suits and swim diapers and change your kiddos there until they're potty trained.

This is what we do, and we use a reusable.

  • I heard they only hold poop, but was also told babies should not be in pools or lakes until after 4 month shots because they can get the roto virus, which can be nasty diarrhea.

  • Yes, they don't hold pee so change last minute! we were given the OK to swim at 2 months with both my kids.

  • i thought so too but no the swim diapers - even the disposable ones - do not hold urine just poop. i was at the pool w/friends an my friend's lo was in a disposable huggie little swimmer and she peed and it went all over the blanket.
  • where do you ladies find swim diapers small enough??  I feel like I have looked for them, but always find 6mo+ and LO is not old enough or weighs enough for them...

  • They aren't supposed to hold urine.  Remember they get wet?  They are just supposed to hold poop.

I have a total peanut (he weighs a little over 11lbs at 3.5 months).  The disposables say they are for 16-26lbs or something.  I bought them anyway and they are huge. Since I'm holding him in the pool I just keep him snuggled up and figure they won't leak.  I also generally know when he poops so if he did, I'd just get out quick! LOL

I also have a couple of resuable.  Those you can get in smaller sizes.  They are still a little big but do the trick.

If you have a little girl, I would think the suit would hold the diaper on.  It's harder on boys because, as of yet, I haven't found trunks that you can actually cinch the waistband.

My pedi gave us the okay before 3 months to go in the pool. :)

  • My re-usable is marked 6-12 months but it fits my 5 month old. Have you tried to find one of those? My son's just looks like a tiny speedo, and I put his swim trunks on over it. ALthough our trunks do have a mesh thing in them that would likely hold a disposable swim diaper (it's from babygap).

Another idea is to get a diaper cover and use that over the swim diapers if you're concerned it will fall off (and you have a boy in trunks with nothing to hold the diaper).

They probably don't have smaller since a lot of people won't put babies in a pool before 6 months. I got the okay from my pedi, and DS loves the pool, so he's been going in since 4 months.

  • Neither hold pee.  I try to use my reusable one but have some disposables also.
