Postpartum Depression

Zoloft and Breastfeeding

I breastfeed my four month old son, and was just diagnosed with PPD. The doctor put me on zoloft and said it was fine with breastfeeding. I went for a second opinion today and that doctor told me the same as well. However my pharmacist had a different view.

Just wondering if anyone else is doing both, taking zoloft and breastfeeding.

Re: Zoloft and Breastfeeding

  • I am and have been for about 4 months. Hasn't been a problem. My doctor and pharmacist both said it was ok. The Zoloft gives me crazy dreams though....

  • I am taking it and breastfeeding. My doctor, DS pedi and the pharmacist all told me that Zoloft is fine with breastfeeding. However that being said, I take it at night because I usually on average about a 5-6 hour of DS sleeping so it makes me feel a little bit better that due to how fast the medication is metabolized. I spent days looking up information before I decided that I was ok with taking it and breastfeeding. In the end DH and I decided that me being healthy was better than the alternative.

I third what the PP have said. I've been taking 20 mg of Zoloft for eight months now and still bf 4-5x a day. I was about as low as one could go, but my refusal to be on medicine due to bf'ing was my big hang up. It took a lot of convincing from my doctors before I finally agreed to it!
