Question about First Appt

I'm planning on calling on Thursday to schedule my first appointment, but was curious if it was an appointment my DH should be at. I work from home so it'll be easier for me to make an appointment during the day and not have to work around DH's schedule... those of you who have already gone (for this baby or a previous one), what do they go over? Would it be beneficial for him to be there?

Re: Question about First Appt

  • DH is not going this time (he went with our first).  At my office they do a pap and a transvaginal ultrasound at the first appointment.  He did not like being there for the pap at all and wasn't fond of the "dildo cam."   There is a private facility near us that does ultrasounds and before 15 weeks its only $35 so we will either do that or he will go to my anatomy scan.

  • If they do an ultrasound at your first appointment, you'll probably want him there. You'll get to see your little bean and hear/see the heartbeat!

Yea, see that's what I'm concerned about... having him leave work and then just being bored the whole time. I'll ask when I call if they'll be doing an u/s or anything fun like that. If not, I'll leave it up to him if he wants to come or not.

  • I will have a u/s, but I don't think DH is going to come. I will ask him if he wants to, but I already made the appointment. He went with DD but I don't know if he will want to miss work for this one or not.

  • My husband came to my first appointment with my first pregnancy, because that is when my doctor does all of the family history stuff. He needed to be there to answer his family's questions. I would ask your doctors office when you call to schedule.

  • This is my first pregnancy, my first appointment in on July 23rd (I'm going crazy, I can't wait!!) My boyfriend is planning on coming with me if he can get off work, I told him he didn't have to come but he really wants too! This will be his second child, he has a 4 year old daughter from his previous relationship so I figure he may know just a little more about some things than I do!

  • It happened to come up yesterday so I just flat out asked him if he wanted to come. He said of course he wanted to come, was I crazy?? Even if he got bored, he wanted to be there. So I guess that's settled :)

And that's a good point about family history... I do know most of the medical issues in his family, but it'll be better for him to be there.

  • I would say definitely yes to the first one, especially if you will hear the heartbeat. For other monthly appointments DH didn't come. They're short, quick listen to hb and measuring belly. He came to all the u/s and once when I was having some issues (that turned out to be nothing).
  • He will not be coming. It's too difficult to work around his schedule.
