"Not very big for twins"?

Pregnant twin mamas:  I hear quite often that I'm not very big for carrying twins. I am 23 weeks pregnant and this has been a wonderful pregnancy so far. Both babies are growing right on target, so I'm not worried at all. I'm curious, when did you become really big and uncomfortable? I know every pregnancy is different, just wanted to see what others are experiencing. Thanks!

Re: "Not very big for twins"?

  • I was the same as you didn't look like I was really pregnant with twins and wasn't real uncomfortable. But in between 25-26 weeks I have started too get a lot more uncomfortable and my belly has stated to grow much faster. I'm at 28 weeks tomorrow and it always feels like I've got either a head on my bladder or feet in my ribs, both my girls are head down right now.

  • I heard that throughout my pregnancy. Looking back at pictures, I really didn't get any bigger than with my singleton (I did deliver a month earlier though). I started feeling a lot bigger and more uncomfortable around 30ish weeks.

  • I heard this all the time when I was pregnant.  I'm very tall so I carried small.  My boys were on the small side (5 lb 9 oz and 4 lb 12 oz at 37 weeks) but fine.

I got big an uncomfortable near the very end - maybe 35 weeks on.  I felt really good before that.

  • I feel like I am pretty small for carrying twins. Up until about 2 weeks ago people couldn't even tell I was pregnant. Yesterday we had our 19 week check up and I have gained 12 lbs and am measuring 25 weeks! It doesn't show much though since I am 5'11".

  • I didn't even know I was having twins instead of a singleton until 20 weeks, partly because I was growing like there was just one baby in there. I'll be 26 weeks on Friday, and I've gained about 10 lbs in the past 6 weeks, which floors me. So, since 20 weeks I've been gaining about 1.5 - 2lbs per week, whereas at 20 weeks I'd only gained 8lbs total. I'm measuring 3 weeks ahead. Weeks 20-30 definitely seem to be the biggest growing period for us, but I've heard it slows down by 30 weeks.

I've also been told I don't look very big for twins (I FEEL like an elephant, however), but they're growing on track and my weight gain has definitely picked up. As long as the babies are growing well and your doctor is happy with their progress, then you're doing a great job!

  • Thanks Ladies! This is so awesome to have others to talk to about this. Shauna816, we also learned we were having twins at our 20 week ultrasound. Talk about a total shock!

  • I heard this also until the last trimester, then people were saying things like "whoa, you must be having twins.".

  • 28-30 weeks.  I hit the 28 week wall and it wasn't sooo bad but by 30 I was just done.  That's also when my cervix started to shorten slightly and I started working from home.

  • I got big fast, but I am short, with a very short torso.  I know other twin mommas who are taller than me that carried more like a singleton.  Its different for everyone, what matters is that they're healthy and growing well.

Shock is an understatement :) I needed some time to adjust, but now I'm so looking forward to bringing home my two boys!

  • Yep, I'm 37w and people are still shocked there are two in there. I'm 5'10 and these babies are practically standing up inside me, rather than sticking out.

How big do they want you to get?. Honestly.  I didn't get enormous until the last few weeks of my pregnancy with the twins,  but I was so big that I couldn't function.  (My older DD was really more of a free range toddler , she got away with a lot more than the twins do now.)  I really don't know what is wrong with some people though.  When is it ever appropriate to make comments about the size of a pregnant woman?  Unless it's " you look great," or " yourre such a cute pregnant lady," just dont say it.

  • I get this all the time. Everyone tells me I look small for carrying twins. They are growing right on track and I am measuring 5 weeks ahead. I am pretty tall though (5'8") with a long torso. Can't talk much about when the uncomfortable started because I'm only 22 weeks.

  • I remember people telling me that i Didnt look like i was having twins ! I started feeling miserable around 32 weeks ! Im 37 weeks today and measured at 55 cm and Im 5 ft ! HUGE !

  • I don't look any bigger than I normally do. But i am defiantly a lot more uncomfortable. It might be because I have 2 heads in my ribs. So sitting isn't much of an option and I don't remember the last time I was able to bend over.

  • I was told I didn't look big enough to be carrying twins literally until I delivered. I felt huge and uncomfortable for most of my third tri, but all I ever heard was that I was so small for twins. I think people have some sort of misguided idea that being pregnant with twice the babies means you will literally look twice as pregnant.

  • A lot of people said that to me but I was measuring about 8-10 weeks ahead, the babies were growing right on schedule. I think they just didn't really know what they were talking about and/or were somehow trying to be nice. Like one friend kept telling me she felt like she was bigger than me when she was pregnant, but she's also about 5'2" and I'm 5'7" so it might've been just perception.
