not sleeping in bassinet... only the swing..

Hi girls! I hope everyone is doing well. I'm slowly starting to adjust alot better!

My LO is a great sleeper! But she only likes to sleep in her swing, after falling asleep on me. I totally dont mind that she can only fall asleep when I hold her (my ped told me you cannot spoil a newborn... so I'm spoiling her!) Anyhow, when we first came home, we had some issues, and the only thing that ever soothed her was her swing. And now, she seems to only love sleeping in her swing. I've been trying to transition her to sleep in her bassinet, but everytime I put her in there (on her back or on her side) she wakes up about 5 minutes later. When I put her in her swing, she's out for 2-3 hours! Our swing is in the living room, and I've been sleeping in the living room because I dont want to leave her in the swing by herself and have me sleeping in my bed. I miss sleeping with my husband! I miss my bed and I know having her sleep in the swing isnt the best thing for her.

I really dont know how to effectively transition her from the swing to the bassinet. ..... any suggestions?

  • My LO is having a hard time staying asleep when he is flat on his back these days, too. He seems to prefer being a little bit elevated and/or snuggled, so the bouncy seat has worked well for us for naps. They also make a Nap Nanny that has an incline but they are a bit expensive IMO. You might also try swaddling to see if she likes that snug, secure feeling.  (We have to leave LO's arms free though, else he gets really mad.) Or if the constant motion does it for her, try gently wiggling the bassinet for a long time until she isn't restless. Sometimes I have to try about 3 times before I can get DS to stay asleep in his PNP but eventually he gets tired enough to get comfy. Good luck!

  • I have this same issue. He will not sleep in crib or bassinet. He wants to sleep in myarms or elevated in his bouncy seat. Everyone is strongly reccomending the rock n play so I think I will give that a shot. Good luck!

  • Can you move the swing into your bedroom? Since LO likes the swing, I'd use what works. ;)

I think all babies like different things. My LO isn't into the Rock N Play at all yet I hear great things about it from other parents.

If you can't move the swing, I would pick up LO from the bassinet when she cries and let her fall asleep again in your arms. Then try putting her in again. Maybe after a couple of tries she will stay in the bassinet.

    Good luck!

  • Personally I would invest in a Rock N Play, we have the sungabunny one, at least for nights.  Not to freak you out but I let my Los sleep in their swings during the day but never at night.  DS is a big rooter, as was DD, and when they root I find their mouth go to the side right into the lamb ear on the plush lamb swing.  It just made me nervous that if I was asleep the baby could suffocate.  The Rock n Play is made for sleeping where as the swing is not.  The head rest on the swing is much more plush than the Rock N play.  I know some mom?s worry about flat head with the Rock n Play but to be honest I don?t believe it causes it.  Babies should not be on their backs all day and all night that is where tummy time, holding the baby, etc? comes into play.  If a baby is in a containor with its head in the same direction 18 to 20 hours a day the baby may develop a flat head no matter if LO is in the swing, rock n play, pack n play etc...
