I'm not a dad-to-be but happened on this page with my husband who will be soon. I saw your post and just had to respond. This is completely NORMAL. Actually, if children are NOT going through this phase, I would be concerned. We don't have children yet, but I studied to be a teacher and had to take some child psychology classes. What your child is going through is called the Sensorimotor stage of Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development. This phase lasts from birth to about age two and is divided into some sub-stages that you could look up on wikipedia. However, if you really think about it without the psychology, it still makes sense for kids to put things in their mouths. Why is it so pleasurable for humans to kiss? The lips and mouth are some the most touch-sensitive places on the human body, and a toddler would naturally think that to explore something better, he shouldn't just touch it with his hands but also his mouth to get a good understanding of what it is. Also, take a look at the name of the phase. Sens--the senses. Ori--orally. Motor--motor skills. Completely normal. At about age two, children will come to understand that it's not appropriate to put everything into their mouth because they will comprehend that some things could be harmful to them (or they just might simply lose interest, which is okay, too).
Just a warning, though. If your kids is off by a few months on the cognitive development phases, it's okay. People's development varies. Your kid might be a little slow or very advanced but when a child reaches adolescence, it all evens out.
I'd just make sure your kid doesn't try to swallow any batteries or anything.
My 2 month old will stick anything in his mouth that he can manage to get there. Luckily he's not mobile enough to get his mitts on anything that we don't hand to him. Right now he's all about sucking his fingers, but a blanket or toy will do in a pinch. If it exists, a baby/toddler will try to put it in their mouth.
-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.
A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.

no, you're kid's weird
Thanks for bump stalking me W.
I did specify "my mouth" not his mouth, right?
Anyway, it's both food and toys. He thinks it's hilarious. I'm not worried about it, like I said. I just thought it was humorous and worth sharing.
LOL
