LO facing front in the moby?

My friend showed me a way to wear LO in my moby facing outward.  He likes it a lot better because he can look around.  I'm wondering, though, why they don't give this as an option in the instruction book that came with the wrap.  Is there a reason why it's not safe? It feels pretty secure.  I'll try to post a picture of how I'm doing it...

Re: LO facing front in the moby?

  • We just started M front facing in the moby a few days ago. He sits just like in your pic, except I put his arms through the "straps" over your shoulders. That way his shoulders are secure just in case he decides to flop forward.

  • It's not optimal for hip development because the baby is dangling from their crotch instead of sitting on their butt, it's easier for the baby to get overwhelmed with nowhere to hide, and it will make your back hurt.

Oh, that's a good idea.  I could see how that would make him more secure.  I did pull up the front band of cloth more under his armpits later so he didn't flop forward as we took our walk.

I've also read that it isn't good for LO's spine.  The front carry makes LO arch his back because his spine has to curve around your breasts.

Yeah, that. BUT my Moby is 5 years old, and the front carry is included in the instructions. It was also the only way dd1 allowed us to carry her. She loved it, and would go right to sleep. I probably wouldn't do it now with dd2, and if I did, it would probably be for a short amount of time. I don't really use my Moby now though because I have a Boba carrier.

Interesting link. Thanks.  I was suspicious there might be some reason that I haven't thought of.  It's a shame, though, bc he really likes looking around as we walk.

  • Never in a Moby (the instructions used to say it was ok, but it's just not safe), and whenever you feel comfortable with a woven wrap. In a soft structured carrier, I'd probably wait till 3-4 months.

Thank you! We did a mini photoshoot today, and believe it or not, this was the best we got. My kids don't cooperate very well.

  • I agree with what's been said already about front-facing not being ideal because of spinal development and crotch pressure, etc. I would recommend getting the ergo baby carrier. It's really comfy and our little guy loves looking around in it, because even though he is facing me, he can still look around. He really chills out in it too, and does the whole quiet/alert thing : )
