Child support on credit report?

I pulled my DH's credit report, to make sure there is nothing on there that shouldn't be (for the sake of buying a house) and I was really surprised to see an entry from our county for the CS he pays BM2.  I am assuming it is on there because it gets taken directly out of his paycheck?

Re: Child support on credit report?

  • That's weird. I've only ever heard of it showing up on a credit report when there are significant arrearages. I would have your husband check with the local CS agency and double check if this is their normal protocol. Also, check with someone who handles financing and see if this impacts his credit rating at all.

  • I used to work in finance and have seen a lot of credit reports. Some states/jurisdictions do report it to the credit bureaus, only if it is paid through the child support enforcement agency in that jurisdiction (whatever that particular agency may be).

It makes sense. It is a financial obligation, like any other bill and banks should be aware of the true debt to income ratio before lending someone money.

  • as long as he's not late on any payments I can't imagine it would hurt his credit at all... yes it will lower your debt/ income ratio, but do you really want to purchase a home that you can't afford?

fwiw, I've never heard of this and I work in financing, but it could depend on the state/ county.

  • I am an underwriter for a national lender. Since it's coming directly from his paychecks we would have seen it and questioned it anyway. Some areas report it to the agencies, some don't.

It's not an issue if he's not behind. :)

It is listed as current and based on the credit score it isn't having a negative impact on his credit. I have just never heard of it before.

  • It makes sense to me that it would be on the report.  It is a an expense that a bank would consider when determining approval for a loan.
