Do they really look ID?

I found out I was having twins at 20 weeks. They were confirmed mono/di by the MFM doctor. He's a very experienced doctor and he checked everything very carefully. I don't doubt they are ID, but I'm surprised by how different they look. I'm sure every parent of IDs says that :). When they are side by side most people can tell them apart, because there is still a size difference. However, my husband and I are the only ones that know who is who when looking at just one baby.

Can you easily spot the differences?

  • their features definitely look the same, but yeah, the size difference must help a lot! :) i find that (even with myself looking at my own kids) it's not that it's hard when they're next to each other, it's when you have nothing to compare them to. when they were babies, miles was half a pound smaller than the other two, but if i didn't have the other two to pick up and compare to him, i might have thought he was someone else. :P

  • Yes they look ID but I can definitely see the size difference.

  • My uncles are identical (they were part of fraternal triplets, but the third baby didn't survive much past birth), and I've never had trouble telling them apart. They have slightly different features, to me, even though they're obviously identical. My husband and brother-in-law, however, who have only been in the family for under ten years, can't tell them apart for the life of them :) I think when you're close to twins, especially as their mother, you'll see differences that others won't.

  • Yes, peakay the size difference is helpful! I was so freaked out during the pregnancy that I wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

They looked less similar at birth, but as they are getting bigger I see a stronger resemblance. At the beginning I was beginning to think that perhaps the dr. was wrong and what looked like one placenta was just two fused together. I wasn't told anything at the hospital and was not in the right frame of mind to ask.

Shaunah, I think you're right. Mamas see those subtle differences that others may not notice.
