Lurker with a baby who won't nap

You guys always have such great advice, perhaps you can help!

We are trying to get my son to nap in his crib.  Before he was in someone's arms, his swing (now outgrown), or in the "big bed" (also no longer an option that he's so mobile).

He gives all the right sleepy cues (fussy, rubbing eyes, yawning) and we've tried any number of ways to settle him (nursing, reading, rocking) but even if he is asleep in our arms when we put him down, his eyes pop open, and he'll be standing up screaming in no time at all.  When he does manage to sleep, it's for 30 minutes at most.

He only sleeps about 9-10 hrs at night (8:30/9-6/7) so I know he needs these naps to get enough sleep.

Any suggestions? Are there any good nap training techniques or books that I'm missing?

 Thanks!!

  • How does he go to sleep at night? Is he able to put himself to sleep then?

Also, you might want to start the nap routine (short and sweet) before you see the sleep signals. If you usually see sleepy signs around 2 hours awake, start the nap a few minutes earlier, you might be catching him when he's too tired. Being too tired makes my daughter a bear to put down for a nap.

Did you sleep train?  I did the SleepEasy Solution, as did many of the ladies here, and I nap trained the same way I night trained.  Also, I'd start putting him down drowsy but awake instead of holding/rocking to sleep.  That way he learns to self soothe, and he won't wake up the minute you set him down.

Yes. We had great success with SleepEasy. Sounds like your LO needs to be sleep trained. It will be tough for a little while, but as soon as they learn how to sleep, you will be so happy and your LO will be rested and happy!  Good luck!

Another vote for SeepEasy. Naps can still be difficult for B. It usually takes 15-30 minutes of fussing for a nap.
