FTM silly question: White Onesies

OK, so everyone I know keeps telling me I need to have a bunch of white onesies on hand. If you're putting clothes on them, what's the point?  What am I missing here?  I saw they come in all sizes and long and short sleeve. TJMaxx has some for $5 so I was going to pick a couple packs up but I didn't know how many in each size I needed and if I need short, long or both. Thanks :)

  • I'm a stm and don't see the point! I never put a onesie under clothes, but it doesn't get too cold here in SC. Maybe they suggested white so it matches everything?

  • The only time I used those was for layering in the winter.  I like the Carters long sleeved ones - nice for under short sleeve tops or just another layer under a long sleeved outfit.

  • When it gets colder (like it always does in MI :)) you'll want LO in one more layer than you have on as a rule of thumb.  So those white onesies are a good way to add that layer.

I'd only buy 1 pack (of the short sleeve) in each size for what you think LO will be in during the colder months :) The long sleeve onesies are great for layering under tee shirts, so if you have quite a few of those, then they're worth it.  If not, don't waste your money!

  • DD was born in January and I never layered her outfits with onsies.  However, my friend just had her 2nd LO in June, it's super hot, and she is still layering her outfits with onsies. :/  I never saw the point, unless your house is super cold.  Just more laundry to wash.

  • I never used those with DD and she was born in January.  I never even put anything under her sleepsacks/miracle blanket except her diaper.  She was quite the sweater and we live in CA, so maybe it just never got cold enough?

I'm not sure thats good advice! My discharge nurse kept telling us to dress lo how we would dress. I guess it depends who you ask.

  • For a NB, I loved the long sleeved with cuffs to cover their hands so they don't scratch themselves. Those baby mittens they sell for the same purpose do not stay on for longer than 2 seconds.

For DS being born in winter, he always had a onsie on as an undershirt & even up until this spring, he always had one on, too. Besides for layering, it's nice to not have their diaper or belly hanging out when you're picking them up, etc.

It also prevents them from taking off their diaper when they learn how!

  • White is easier to bleach / keep clean.
  • I used onesies all the time. For several reasons - it's better than their shirt riding up and exposing their diaper and belly, it's an extra layer, it's easier for middle of the night changes if you are using a sleep sack of some sort than a sleeper. Mostly though I hated when his shirt rode up! It was also convenient to put on with just pants or shorts. We used long sleeved, short sleeved, and when hot out those tank top ones. Sometimes I'll put long sleeved under a t-shirt but he didn't start wearing t-shirts until he was older. I had white but also lots of colors too.

    Edited typo.

Yeah I never layered anything either. Granted my son was born in the Spring and the summer months in Florida are brutal. So there was no layering going on at all. This baby will be born before the winter so I might find that I need some. But I will wait and see.

  • I put onesies under everything, so I do see a need for them.  We had about 10-12 onesies in each size up until about 18 months. The only time we didn't use them was in the summer.

Also, Carter's onesies are, by far, the best.  They last the longest, look the nicest, and are true to size, even after washing them 100 times.

  • Short sleeve onesies are essential in colder weather, to layer under clothes, and if you have some cute tees, long sleeves are great for layering under those.  But you don't need a ton, like PP said, just get some sizes for the colder months.  You definetly don't need them in the warm months!

This regarding Carter's onesies holding up the best! If you can find a Carter's outlet (or a good sale) stock up, especially through the winter.

I'm not sure how it's not good advice, because you're basically saying the same thing.  Like Harms and TAGs, I live in MI, and here we dress in layers in the winter because you're constantly going from heat to cold, etc. so if that's how we would dress, that is in line with what your discharge nurse advised. Also, what Harms is saying is you can then use T-shirts that the baby fits in, even though it may be winter because you'll have long-sleeves underneath.

  • Um. You know what I did with the white onesies I had before DS got here? Tie-dyed them. Very useful for that. ;) If I end up with a free weekend day I want to do more for DD, though she'll also be rocking her big brother's tie-dyed shirts and onesies. :)

I think the only actual white top we ended up with was from the hospital. Your baby just needs clothes. They aren't that picky about color.

ETA: Regarding layering, I definitely layered DS's clothes every day in the winter in WI. We had a lot of fun matching colors, though, so he'd either where any old onesie under a long sleeve shirt or (more frequently) get more use out of his short sleeve tshirts by wearing a contrasting color long sleeve onesie underneath.

    this.

Also, be careful with the Gerber ones.  they run small.

  • I am a FTM and will probably learn the hard way. But I am planing to layer with colored onesies.  I am just not a fan of white. I can use shout or tide stick on his clothes for stains.

Oh man! Gerber are the worst. I have a small child, but he was still wearing 18 month Gerber onesies at 9 months. My MiL kept buying them for us because the only store in her town is a Walmart and she is limited, but I kept begging her to buy anything else. Garanimals actually fit pretty well IMO. Faded Glory runs a bit small, but not like Gerber.

  • It isnt necessarily a question of layering as far as my friends went. They all suggested tons of white onesies because when you are around the house not taking the baby anywhere, especially in that first month, you do not want to bother with shirts and pants or dresses and diaper covers. You put a white onesie on the baby and if it spits up or if you have some diaper spill over incidents, the white onesies are cheap and all white so you can toss them if they are really bad or you can bleach them.

My daughter is 1 and there are still days where I know we are not going anywhere so I put a onesie on her and I am done. It is a lot easier to change a diaper when they are just wearing a onesie than to change with pants one. When baby #2 comes, I plan on doing the same thing. onesies all the way :)

  • I am getting a bunch, but it's because I love babies in white onesies.

  • I like them because they match all the baby legs I have (over 30 pairs), and when they get stains, I can bleach them.

I do use the long skeeved white onesies for layering under dresses and such. Nice during spring/fall when it's too cold to wear a little sleeveless dress but the dress still fits.

I also use them for pjs. Long sleeved onesie + cotton pants.

  • For DD#1, who was born in March, I didn't use white onesies until fall/winter when I layered them under short sleeve shirts or sundresses that were still long enough to wear as a tunic short paired with leggings. For DD#2, I will be doing the same thing as she will be getting her sisters 1st year hand-me-downs which include alot of warmer weather outfits. I also bought iron-on decals & put them on the buttload of boring short sleeve white onesies from DD#1 to make DD#2 some "new" clothes.

  • We put a onesie under most clothes, except in the summer. But I don't see why they need to be white, unless people are concerned about matching.

Same here, but that's about it. I generally loathe onesies.

  • I bought a pack of white newborn onesies for DD and maybe used one of them one time.  I never had a use for them.  She was born in October and we would layer her outfits through the (Florida) winter, but not with plain white onesies.  Maybe if we lived somewhere colder we would have used them more.  Regardless, I still have them and have kept them in case we have a use for them this time around.
