My baby is gagging on bottles - Advice please!!

DS#2 has just turned 2 months old, I am thrilled to say we have managed to ebf, however we kept forgetting to introduce a bottle, we did at around 6 weeks & after a little fuss he took it & the bottle about a week later, since then he has flat out refusd them & when the nipple gets in his mouth he starts to gag.  I was thinking of trying other nipples, a Nuk sippy cup with silicone top, if needs be.  We currently have dr browns bottles which ds#1 took happily, are there any bottles that you can recommend, maybe with a shorter nipple.  Thank you so much ladies.

  • My LO did this too at first, he stopped after a week or so when he got used to bottle feeding.  I would give him a few practice runs before buying a ton of additional nipples/bottles.  Start by giving him a small 1 oz bottle daily (via your DH) for a few days and see if it gets better ;)

ETA: we use Tommee Tippee bottles.  I posted about this and people kept telling me it was the nipple flow to0 fast etc, but in my case it wasn't, just getting used to the process.

Thanks!!  Far better idea to put only 1oz in a bottle, this week I have thrown 6oz down the drain, it's made me mad!!  I was in bed last night thinking "I'm lessening the amount in the bottle!!". DH needs to try for me every night, thank you.

  • If you do think the flow might be a problem, you can get preemie flow nipples for Dr. B's bottles. That's what we use.

  • My LC suggests breastflow bottles and my pedi suggests nuk bottles.  My son liked both.
