2nd Trimester

Couldn't find bladder

So I had an appt today. I am 22 weeks today and I was 20 weeks exactly at my a/s. First thing OB said was "you have to have another ultrasound." Now I know that any ultrasounds scheduled after a/s is not a good thing so I was freaked out right away. She tried to re-assure me that everything was ok, but she said the ultrasound tech couldn't get a shot of the baby's bladder. I am sure I looked panicked b/c I felt panicked and she just kept saying, the report didn't say anything was wrong and that everything looked fine. She also said that if there was a bladder issue with the baby then I would have amniotic fluid issues which I wasn't.

So I guess I feel ok but I am just a little worried. Of course this was the first appt DH couldn't be at.

  • I went back and reread your post. At first I was going to say that it sounds like the tech forgot to print out a pic of the bladder. But the dr said "the tech couldn't get a good pic" which makes me think that maybe baby just wasn't cooperating.

DId the tech say anything about it while the u/s was occurring? It seems odd to me that you would walk out of it thinking everything's fine and then be told that you need to go back. If something was seriously wrong, I would assume the tech would make that known in some way.

Tech acted as if everything was great. I even asked him if everything looked good. He said he couldn't officially tell me that b/c he isn't a doctor but that I shouldn't lose any sleep. My OB said the report stated no issues or concerns just that they couldn't get a shot of the bladder. I am trying to take it as a positive and think  I get to see my baby again.

  • The way you described it makes it sound like they just need a better shot - T&Ps that they go back I'm at your next ultrasound, get the picture they need, and tell you everything looks great!

  • If they were concerned, they wouldn't have waited until your appointment today to tell you there was a problem; doc would have called you as soon as the report from the tech got to him, and you would have already had the 2nd scan already.  Try to relax.  When I was pg with DS, we had to do 3 or 4 u/s before they were able to get all of the shots of his heart that they needed. He just wasn't very cooperative during u/s.

  • It doesn't sound worrisome, but I do understand how easy it is to psych yourself out. My doc made me get 2 "extra" u/s with DD because I kept measuring small. It was agony. She did it, of course, to make sure everything was fine, but it always freaked me out because she was also doing it to make sure something wasn't wrong.

I think sometimes doctors/techs forget that things that aren't big deals to them SOUND like big deals to us!

This. It's not like the tech couldn't find the bladder, she just wasn't able to get a good shot of it. We almost had to go back for DD to see her feet, but then after like an hour, she finally showed them.

  • Oh honey, I'm so sorry!  I'm sure it was just baby not cooperating and not that there's anything wrong.  You'll get another one, get to see your little bean again, they'll get the pictures and it will be fine!!  Don't stress, momma!

  • Peeking over, but with my first they couldn't see the stomach. So at my next appointment they tried again with another ultrasound. They still couldn't see it. They told me there could be a birth defect and sent me to a perinatologist. At that appointment they finally saw it. I would think that it is similar in the sense that they told me that when the stomach is empty it is hard to see. I bet if the baby had emptied its bladder it would be difficult to see as well.
  • Don't worry too much. At my 20 week appointment they didn't get a profile shot or a good enough shot of his left kidney. He was facing us looking at us! They just said they have to have pictures of everything and a lot of the time the baby isn't in the right position to get them all. They scheduled me for another ultrasound for my next appointment. I wouldn't worry, they would tell you if  needed to worry.

  • I have to go back in a month for another u/s because they weren't able to get all the ahots they wanted of her spine. Hopefully it was just poor wording choice by your dr.
  • I had to go back for a 2nd 20 week sono because hte baby would not cooperate and no pictures of the left side of the heart could be taken.  It was nervewracking even though the doc told me after i was leaving the first time everything looked great.  I went back and after another hour on the table, drinking juice, standing up, sitting down etc everything was perfect. For something so major like that, i would try not to worry...like you said, if there was no bladder you would have other issues as well!!!

thanks guys I feel a little better now. I was not really ever freaking out but just a little on edge about it. Well I am just on edge period right now! We are having roughly 40 guests at our house on Saturday for a BBQ and gender reveal. Our house is fairly small but we have great outdoor space so I wasn't too concerned. The high now for Saturday is 105 and I am thinking everyone is going to want to stay inside so I am stressed :)

  • My cousin's a/s couldn't find a part of her babies brain. She freaked. Did a bunch of research, convinced herself her baby would not live long enough to be born and contemplated abortion. This was all before her ultrasound to make sure everything was alright. Well as it turns out (just as the doctor said) it was there and the us tech just had problems locating it because of the position of the baby. More times than not the second ultrasound confirms everything is fine. Take a deep breath and don't worry. If there is a problem you will have time to do research and at that time you will actually know what to look for. Good luck.

  • If it makes you feel any better, when I just went in for a u/s the tech couldn't find my right ovary! I know its there, it didn't disappear, she just couldn't get a shot of it as well. I have been here before however. Unrelated to pregnancy, I went in because I was having heartburn that wouldn't go away. When the girl scanned me, she kept digging in the same spot asking if that "bothered me". When I asked how long it would be till I found out the results, she said usually it takes about a week but wait... then she says... BUT I WOULD CALL BACK IN 1 HOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who does that! Of course I freaked out and started crying the minute that I got in my car thinking the worst possible! I ended up having gall stones and my gallbladder needed removed. Simple fix really.. but you don't want to hear that from any tech when you know something is wrong with you!!!!

I think the techs try really hard to keep the info to themselves but sometimes the littlest things they say can be the worst. Don't worry until you have your next u/s and the doctor himself says that there is a problem. I know its hard, but stay strong.

  • I had to go back FOUR times for my daughter.  They couldn't see all the chambers of the heart.  If the doctor says not to worry because he/she isn't because fluid levels are normal, I wouldn't worry.
  • Was going to post something encouraging until I saw that the thread was over 2 years old! Pretty sure the OP's issues have all been resolved by now, one way or another.
