Baby Names

Albus?

SO and I are considering the name Albus for our LO, but I'm concerned that it screams "Harry Potter!"  I do like Harry Potter quite a bit, but naming our kid this wouldn't be meant as a nod, though I'm sure others would interpret it as one.  What do you think? Would you use it in spite of the Potter-ness?

Re: Albus?

  • I think people would DEFINITELY assume it was a Potter shout-out and you and your SO are big fans...

That being said, I really do like it as a name! Yes

And if you really do too, then I don't see the problem...it's not like Albus is a terrible/evil character either!

    All of this

  • It does scream HP, and NMS.

  • I kind of like it!  Although, I'm a Harry Potter fan, too!

  • I like it but it does kind of scream HP. I probably wouldn't use it for that reason. But who am I to talk, if people don't know DDs full name they assume HP too.

I saw the thread title and immediately said "Dumbledore"

People will assume that is who he is named after, if that would bother you then I would skip it, but if you don't care then go with it.  its kind of cute!

  • I agree that it screams HP, if that doesn't bother you, go for it.  The name is NMS, but it's not bad.

  • I think anyone who has read the books/seen the movies will assume this since it isn't common in the US. It isn't my style at all, but if you like it and wouldn't be bothered by the HP references then do it.

I came across a British Baby name blog and started reading for fresh ideas and was stunned that all the HP names were legit names. I know that sounds stupid, and it's based in England, so of course she used their culture to name her characters, but it was still interesting.

  • It does scream HP, but not in a bad way. He was a great character.

  • This is what we called the baby before we found out it was a girl! Albie, for short. And yes, it was after the greatest wizard ever.

In all honestly, I love the name, but you will get HP-connections all the time. If that's a deal breaker, you should look for another name.

  • Honestly, until this post, I thought Albus was one of those names that JK Rowling made up for Harry Potter.  It's not a bad association but I think if I met a child named Albus...I'd eyeroll.

  • I read Albus and the very first thing that popped into my head was "Dumbledore" and I'm pretty sure it will be that way for the rest of my entire life.

With that being said it would be kind of cool though, if you wouldn't mind the association for the rest of his life lol. I'm a big Potter fan. I would never name my son Albus though, but would LOVE it if my kids had a friend named Albus lol.

Just NMS and he'll be constantly called Albus Dumbledore and forever hear jokes about it... "Ten points for Gryffindor!" and so on...

  • My first thought was "Dumbledore!"

It is kind of a cool name though. If you use it, just don't name any siblings Harry, Ron, or Hermione.

This. Aside from that, the name is NMS so it wouldn't be worth the association to me. Though, I'd rather my child's name be associated with HP than Twilight or The Hunger Games.

  • Thanks for all your responses... I'm still on the fence about whether or not the constant Potter association will bother me (which probably means it will but I want to just get over it because I do like the name quite a bit) ... I guess  I'll wait until after our a/s to really consider it because this LO might be a girl and then it won't mattter either way

    this.

On that note: our sons name is Maverick and is constantly referenced to Top Gun and it doesn't bother me because we love the name.

So if you love the name and you don't mind the association, I would go with it.

  • Speaking as somebody who has never read or seen Harry Potter, I don't like Albus or the likely nn's of Al and Albie. It just doesn't have a pleasing sound to me. In this case, it seems that the HP association may actually acontribute to people's fondness of the name.
