yet again, i have to get on my soapbox as being one of the only kids from the ghetto to make it WITHOUT a ridiculous name. I know THREE girls with this name and yes, her name is essentially "Jayla" as you previously stated.

I would have said Jayla, too.

FWIW, I teach plenty of "kids from the ghetto to make it out without a ridiculous name" (Taylor, Marcus, Brandon, Micah, Carlos, Kelsey etc etc) along with the "different" or "unique" ones.

I have a students nameed Aqua-ya and De-jia. I dont understand syllables as names or using symbols in a name like ' or -

I subbed for a girl named J'La this year.  It just seems like such an incomplete spelling.
