Dads & Dads-to-be

First Time Dad with some questions

Howdy wanted to ask fellow dads some questions, me and my wife just got married and she got pregnant on the honeymoon found out on fathers day so excited but I have some questions. I want to read to the baby before the birth and continue after I got some books today Call of the Wild, Red Badge of Courage, and the Scarlet Pimpernel will these be okay to read or should I get baby books to start? I am going to get the baby some books to read to him or her any suggestion?

I heard that classical music helps with brain development is this true and if so where can I found some ideas who to play I am a fan of Bach, Beethoven, and some others?

Was also wondering what age a kid becomes interested in sports I am a sports nut and would love to go to games or watch games with my kids any dads out there who know when i can buy my son or daughter their first ball glove?

Thanks if you can help ill have more as we go!!!

Re: First Time Dad with some questions

  • Congrats Dude!

You didn't mention how far along your wife was, but once they hit a certain number of weeks kids can hear sounds so read anything and everything to your kid. I mostly read whatever I have and it makes my wife laugh. Men's Health, Twilight books....whatever we can get our hands on. It's just sounds to him, but it builds familiarity. Same thing with music...there is no hard core evidence that it stimulates brain cells, but it's fun especially if your kid is at the stage where he can listen and even jump, poke and kick. I'm not 100% sure about sports though, that's definitely a later in life activity...once they build motor skills and cognitive abilities, but you can buy them their first glove whenever, when they will be able to use it you might not know, but when they are they will be ready!

  • I don't think it really matters what you read to them. I think the point is for the baby hears your voice. It was kind of amazing in the NICU we would talk to the babies and they seemed to really focus on my wife and I vs the nurses or other visitors.

As for sports our babies are only 8 months old. I would probably say at least 3 years old till you can get them some type of glove. As for going to sporting evens I think you could go before that. The issue may be keeping them entertained. It may be hard to keep a 2 year old entertained for 2-3 hours during a baseball game.

  • Congrats! Thats pretty cool to find out youre having a baby on fathers day. My nephew was born the day before 10 years ago. His dad still loved that it was that close.

Later on near the end of the pregnancy is when they seem to remember things once out in the world. Close to the end of the pregnancy one of Drakes songs was big on the radio and we blared it every-time it was on cause we liked it. Now when that song is on when LO is in the car, she calms down and stops playing with what she has. Shes only 3 months right now and does it. She does love Taylor Swift already too. With the sports thing, as long as you go on doing what you do with sports, theyll likely pick up on it without you have to do anything in specific. Times flies with them so you will be going to their games in no time at all.

  • Thanks guys, She will be 6 weeks on Sunday first doctors appointment is the 9th of July. I am so excited, I went to watch Rock of Ages tonight great movie so I think I am going to get some 80's rock to play for the baby. Any ideas to read to the baby after he or she is born?

Can't wait for the birth. I will be back tomorrow to ask somemore once again thanks.
