Pregnant after 35

Amnio scheduled - Bumped for Buttercup

Had my NT scan and first round of bloodwork done, everything came back as very low risk.  Dr. said don't worry about doing any additional testing.

Today I get the call. 1 in 40 chance of Down's based on the 2nd round of bloodwork.

They scheduled an amnio for Thursday. I'm freaking out.

  • I was freaking out at 1 in 70 but did the MaterniT21 test and it came back negative.  Remember that while it sounds really high, it's still only a 2.5% chance and that means 97.5% chance of not having DS.  Hang in there.  Hope you get the results quickly and it's nothing to worry about.

  • Thanks for saying that, I've been trying to think positive all day.  Unfortunately my provider/insurance don't offer the MaterniT21 test, which I would much rather do.  The next two weeks and two days are going to be torture.
  • I got a similar call this morning except my odds are 1 in 15. I am floored and beyond freaking out. Everything was fine with the first set of blood work and the NT Scan. My appointment with the Peri is on Thursday morning. It can't get here fast enough. Lots of luck to you!

  • Oh goodness. Sending you lots of luck for Thursday too.
  • I had the amnio after the NT scan bloodwork came back 1:41 odds. It is a long wait but worth it in the end when you get the call that all is normal. I was in your shoes and totally know how you feel. Hang in there and good luck!

I had to pay $235 up front for the blood test and then nothing else was covered but the lab eats the rest.  I may appeal and see if my insurance will pick it up later.  Anyway, it took 3 weeks for the results for my blood work so maybe you will have a shorter wait with the Amnio.  And Amnio is even more accurate than the MaterniT21 test so when you get your results, there shouldn't be any more doubt either way.

  • If your insurance or you want to pay for it, ask for the FISH test.  It gets you the results of your amnio within a few days.

I'll see if they do that one. Thanks for letting me know about it. This is one of those times where I wish I could spend the next two weeks drinking.

  • My friend told me about - thank god.  It also depends on the skill of the person doing the test, but it's fairly accurate.  Insurance covered mine as I told them that we would terminate depending on the results of the amnio.  Otherwise, I'm not sure they would have covered it...?

  • I went thru this with my now healthy and normal one-year old daughter. I was told the chances were 1 in 27 of Down's Syndrome. It was a very rough few weeks of waiting. Try as hard as you can to realize that it's very unlikely something will be wrong, and you're just making sure.

We did not want to go through this again with current pregnancy, so at age 40 am going straight to amnio with no pre-testing this time.

  • dukemeli, wanted to see how your appointment went yesterday.

Ours was weird. We met with the genetic counselor first who gave us the whole breakdown of my results and what usually leads to it (none of which applied to us, leaving me more freaked out). Then she brought up a completely new to us issue of the possibility that I have some sort role in this. Called in a geneticist who measured my eyes and nose for something that had the words mayo and facial in it (can't remember what) and then asked me how much education I'd completed and determined that no I don't have this cognitive disability they were talking about. Gee thanks. So that was a nice little scare.

The level 2 ultrasound tech was the same as I'd have for the NT scan, who I cannot say enough nice things about. She's amazingly thorough and explains everything, but not the results. And gave us a quick 3D view of the baby, who I fell even more in love with.

Then evil doctor came in. I call him evil doctor cause in the group he's the one I like the least. ZERO bedside manner, all book type clinician. He put the needle in what is possibly the most painful spot, because of where the baby was, right around my pelvic bone. And then realized oh he needed to move it. So what should have taken 30sec - a min and felt like a pinch took 5 minutes of him moving and poking and me trying not to scream.

No comments on what he saw from the u/s pics. I asked about the FISH test, and they told me they don't do that. That they don't want to give people hope one week and then dash it the next. So I have to wait the full 2 weeks.

A shot of Rhogam and off to rest. Still sore today, was barely able to sit or walk yesterday.

I'm really hoping all this means the results are good.

  • found it, thank you!!!  I have my level 2 ultrasound tomorrow morning - I will post again when I know more.  I am sending positive thoughts your way too :-)
