In the never-ending "what if it's a boy" baby name debacle, my husband and I were discussing the name Samson today. We both like the nn Sam, but want a longer, more formal first name. That's just how we roll. For example. DS is Maddox, but we call him Max the majority of the time.
He dislikes Samuel, but we're considering putting Samson on the short list. The biblical connection isn't an issue?I actually like that Samson of the Bible was flawed, but in the end sacrificed himself for his people.
What's your first impression of Samson and of Sam? Do you know anyone with this name? Do they like their name?
Middle name will be Waters. Others on the short list are: Rhys, Theodore, Augustine, Flynn, Abram, Jude. His favorite is Theodore (Ted) and mine is Abram (Abe).
Re: Samson
I like really Bram, too, but Abe sounds better with our last name. I agree about Rhys. That's actually my main hesitation about it.

I am not so much a fan of Samson, because I don't care for biblical names in general. If that doesn't bother you, go for it. It sounds nice with Maddox. Max and Sam are a cute sibset.
The others on your list I like are Rhys and Jude (two of my favorites).
I love it! I'm like you; I don't mind the Biblical connection, and kind of like that it's different from all the Samuels, Elijahs, Noahs, etc.
I also love Sam, and have considered Samson bc there are so many more Samuels in the world. I'd vote yes! Good luck!
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
Samson is my dog's name.
We call him Sammy.
My youngest is Samson Dominic. We call him Sam or Sammy, mostly. His brother is Griffin. I felt the same as you about Samuel and biblical references. No one has bugged us about his hair yet either which isn't super long, but hasn't been cut. (he's 1) I'll admit a couple people gave me a hard time about it, which bothered me. But, ultimately, I loved the name Sam so much that I didn't want to regret not naming him Sam because of others. And I wanted the full name because I didn't want him to have a unisex name or ever say that he was 'just Sam'. It fits him, he's a strong little guy. There are a few dogs out there named Samson, but there are also a lot of female dogs named Lily and that doesn't seem to bother people.
