Any very, very simple structured carriers?

My mom is nannying for us and she wants a carrier. We use a Beco Butterfly II, ring sling, and Moby but they're all too complicated for her so she wants an "old-style easy one like when you were little." I have no idea what she is talking about but I am presuming it's some kind of dangling seat one. Are there any safe and simple carriers that are cheap (cheap because I don't suspect she actually will ever use it).

  • What about a mai tei? Tie the waiststrap and then criss cross the shoulder straps on your back, then tie them under LO's bum. Doesn't get much simpler.

  • Tula is pretty simple to use.
  • I would go for a bjorn in that case. You can get them on craigslist or at yard sales used for pennies. I'd show her online what it is to make sure it's the right idea.

I guess by simple I mean easy to put on but also least potential for user-error. I definitely wouldn't be comfortable with her using a ring sling for that factor. I really think she'd not be able to wear that one safely.

I don't find the Beco very easy for someone to put on solo - I sometimes have to have my husband help me adjust it when I put it on.

Hmmm will have to look into a Bjorn. What about those little Infantino carriers?

  • How heavy is your baby? Any of the cheapos gets really uncomfortable  around 15 lb. If she's not willing to learn to properly use your carriers, she should probably just use a stroller when out and hold the baby when in.
  • Why not an Ergo?  They are really easy to use.

  • I don't have a recommendation (we use an Okkatot or a Beco), but maybe can shed some light on the "old-style easy one like when you were little" -- they used to have Gerry Carriers back in the day, still do, I guess, but they look so weird to me.  My mom still talks fondly about the one she used to use for me and my brother.  :)

The bjorn is superior to the infantino ones, and if you go the used route it will likely be the same cost as an infantino one. I agree that over 15lbs it does get uncomfortable, but unless she's wearing LO for long periods of time it really won't be an issue.

If she is planning on wearing your LO for an extended period, I would definitely try to get her into something like an ergo/beco to save her from back pain.

  • If you want cheap and you don't think she will use it that often you could get a bjorn from a resale store. The once upon a child by me usually has them for $15-20.

My mom used a Gerry Carrier with me and my brother when we were little!  We have a ton of carriers, and my mom is most comfortable with my Babyhawk.

  • I think the Ergo is pretty simple. It has buckles instead of ties so there's less user error in terms of the fit. We've taught all our grandparents to use it. Some of them still need "help" because they worry about dropping the baby, but they don't actually need the help. It may not be worth the money though if you don't think she'll use it often.

  • Look at renting from Pax Baby. It would be a shame to spend money on any carrier that she's not going to use, and anything for $15 isn't going to be a quality carrier.
