I'm giving in. I have got to start exercising more and I don't have a lot of time to do it (because my TV won't watch itself, people!) so I'm going to start C25K (couch to 5k) tonight. H and I are both on board although we won't be running together. One of us will go while the other does the bedtime routine with DD, then the other will go when the first one gets back. That way we don't have to get up super early in the morning (which will never happen) and we don't miss out on time with DD.
I really need some good vibes that I'll stick with it. Does anyone have any success stories? Tips? Want to start with me?
Re: C25K
I will do it with you. I'm gonna do it on the treadmill though. It's too dang hot where I'm at. Highs in the 100s right now and pretty humid. But I've been wanting to do it for a while. I've got the RunDouble app ($1.60) on my phone where you can start your playlist and it will just tell you when to walk and run. I tested it out and it worked great.
I did it about halfway through a few years ago but I stopped because it got too cold to run outside and I was working nights so I was always so tired. But I really enjoyed it while I was doing it.
Let's start tonight. I'm looking forward to having a buddy. PM me and let me know how it goes!
Yay! I got the C25K app on my phone and it says it does the same thing. Although it was free, so it may not. lol. Guess I'll find out tonight!
Where are you? It's pretty hot here in Alabama too, but that's why I'm thinking it'll be okay to do it at night. Hopefully it will have cooled off by 8. Fingers crossed!
I'm in Southern IL. It's usually still hot and humid after dark. And I don't wanna run in the dark. I live in the boonies and it creeps me out! Ya never know what's out there. People and animals, and creepy crawlers!
I did it - 4 years ago, and I still run (well not so much since DD). I can't stress enough how important it is to have a buddy! I connected with a fabulous group of women and the encouragement is what got me through 2 half marathons (and counting). Seriously - I was never active, never an athlete in school, so I started from nothing.
Take it easy, listen to your body, and enjoy
Oh, and get some good running shoes - keep trying different brands until you find what you like. Sore feet is an easy excuse not to run
I agree. I went to a store specifically for running shoes. They watch you run and see which way your feet and legs turn. It's good to do that instead of just going into Foot Locker or something and picking ones that you like. I don't walk the same way that I run so I needed different shoes for running. In my experience the shoes aren't really more expensive.
Oh, that's a really good tip! There's a running store that just opened up here. H already went there and got himself some new running shoes. I'll have to go this weekend.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Good for you!! I did C25K last July and it made me a believer. I've never been a "runner" but it eased me into the whole world of running and I'm doing my first half marathon this November. I'll never be fast but I've got endurance and I'm at a place now where I oddly enjoy it.
My first bit of advice would be to get the BlueFin C25K app. (eta - never mind, I see you already got an app). It made life so much easier to have a voice telling me when to run and walk instead of staring at my stop watch.
My other advice which I can't stress enough is to invest in a good pair of running shoes. My first few weeks I just wore the sneakers I had and I had problems with my knees, shin pain, ect. I finally went to a running store and they tested me to see what kind of runner I was and fitted me with good shoes. Made a world of difference!!!
Once you finish C25K, I really recommend Jeff Galloway's program. He's a big proponent of running with walking intervals interspersed. Since I started following his plan I'm actually faster than I was when I was running 100% of the time.
Good luck with it!!!

This whole running and walking thing is totally new to me so thank you for the recommendation! I always heard that you had to just run (never walk) to build your running endurance. I think that's why I always gave up on running - because you can't just go from nothing to running a mile, ya know?
I really really appreciate these tips!!!
Good to know. Thanks for the info!
I'm really wanting to do this, but there is literally no time in the day when I can do this that I'm not responsible for watching my kid. Not to thread-jack, but has anyone successfully done this with a stroller?
Good luck, OP!
I was originally planning on doing it with DS in the stroller but it just got too hot to do it outside. I would suggest a good jogging stroller and work your way up to it. The few times I took him out in the jogging stroller I got pretty exhausted. It's hard pushing a 18lb kid while running! But since it's intervals you get a break every few minutes.
We have a great stroller that I would definitely use to do this, but my DD is older than yours and pretty bossy. She loves when we run, but if we stop she gets mad. She's kind of a slave driver.
I think if you have a good jogging stroller, it wouldn't be much different than running by yourself.
Yes! Races are great motivation! I will never, ever win one...but it's a great time when you hook up with a group. The atmosphere is so positive and encouraging and there is nothing like crossing that finish line, no matter how long it takes to get there!
Fwiw, our group still does 10s and 1s when running long races...we finish faster than if we tried running without regular breaks.
I also run after putting the baby to bed. My DH bikes so we trade nights, or go after the other one like you said. This last time, I used the app from active.com and I LOVED it. You can add your own music and a lady just comes on and tells you when to run and when to walk. It also tracks your distance and pace.
I ran a half marathon before I got pregnant and am going to start training for another one in a couple months. C25K is the best way to get started!
My only other advice is to not worry about your speed, just worry about jogging during your jogging intervals. You will eventually get faster, but for now, just focus on finishing. And don't be afraid to repeat a week if needed. Better to repeat than to injur yourself or give up.
My Ovulation Chart
I don't see why not. It will be probably be a little tougher than if you did it without, but there's nothing wrong with pushing yourself. I would say try it and if it's too much do it without.
Finished week 1, day 1 for a total of 2.12 miles.
That's about the color of my face right now! I don't sweat much I just get beet red!
Good luck girls. Let me know how you did for day 1!!!!
Oh my god, I think I'm about to die. I might have started my cool down a minute or two early but I still managed a total of 1.87 miles in 27 minutes. Whoo! That was rough.
So, what do we do tomorrow? Do we just do a regular walk or take the day off? H says he thinks we're supposed to take the day off to rest. I figured we should be doing a walk.
Great job, nursetrace!
That's awesome! 5k in 32 minutes is great! It was really nice having the time to myself. And I've got Tropical Storm Debbie to thank for a nice cool, windy evening too. If I hadn't been near death hyperventillating, it would have been a lovely jog.
