Natural Birth

STM (or more)- did you go into labor in the middle of the night?

This is our third and both times I've delievered in the evening.  My midwife tells me that most second time (or more) mommas will go into labor in the evening after all the kids go to sleep.  So I'm just curious what others experiences were of non-induced births.

  • This is my third pregnancy.  I woke up @ 5am with my daughter and my water was leaking.  She was born @ 11:27am that day.  I woke up around 7am having contractions with my son (my membranes were stripped the day before) and he was born at 2:29 that afternoon.
  • With DS I was in labor from one in the morning until noon.

  • With my son, I woke up with my first painful contraction at 12:45am, and he was born at 11:01am.

  • Yes, 10 pm or so.  Went to pushing at midnight.  :-)

The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place.” ― Cormac McCarthy, The Crossing

  • With my second, I started labor at 3 am, and he was born at 6 pm the same day. I was really worried about going into labor in the evening and having to stay up all night with contractions, so it worked out perfect!

If we ever have a third, I hope it's the same thing - laboring during the day was really good, I thought.

  • Wow.  It had not even occurred to me that we need to have someone lined up to come over and watch DS, should I go into labor at night.  Thanks ;)  (To answer your question, though, labor started around 7 PM)

  • Hmm..interesting. With DD I had my 1st contraction right around 8 pm, right at DS1s bedtime. She was born 8 hours later. With DS2 I had some irregular contractions through the afternoon and early evening, but things really picked up around midnight, and he was born by 7:30 am.

  • DD1: water broke at 3 AM, born at 9:25 PM that night

DD2: water broke at midnight, born at 6:13 AM that morning...so the theory works for me!

  • Ds1-induction starting at 4:30p and had him at 9:30pm

DS2-spontaneous labor awoke at 3:00am with strong contraction and had him at 6:30am

Ds3-spontaneous labor had prodromal labor all morning and strong contractions starting at around 2:00pm (the moment I buckeled them in the car to go stay with Grandma for the weekend) and had him at 9:30pm

I think there is something to that. I think our bodies know when the right time to go into labor. It is always one of the most nerve wracking things about waiting for labor-making sure our other LOs are cared for.

2am the first time, 10pm the second.
  • DS: Contractions started at 3AM, born at 1:21AM the next night/morning.

DD: Membranes ruptured at 8PM, while DS was getting ready for bed, no contractions all night and contractions finally began when DS went out with family for lunch, born at 2:14PM.

In both cases I believe having people around or tasks that needed accomplished has stalled my labor.

  • With DD1, early labor started for me about 2 a.m., but then I didn't go into full-blown labor until about 10 p.m. that night.  DD1 arrived at 7:23 p.m. the following night.  It was a long day(s).

With DD2, I was awakened at 1 a.m. by contractions.  She was born at 2:17 p.m. the same day.

  • Woke up with contractions at 12:53 am.... Got to hospital at 1:30am... Had DS in my arms at 2:33am. Glad we just brought DD to the hospital with us and had in laws meet us there. Wouldn't have made it otherwise.

  • Both my kids labor started around 8 PM. DD was born at noon the next day, DS was born at 4:30 AM :)

With DS I would contract regularly all night, then stop during the day - that happened for 2 nights before the real deal.
