What's a mud room?

Like in a house.  What's the purpose of it?  I was reading a ribbon on one of my FB groups about amenities of your dream house and a few people mentioned mud rooms.

Please to explain.

An entry way room for putting shoes and coats and stuff.

  • Its a front hall (or back door/side hall) which you just put your coats and shoes lol..

  • A place to take off your shoes and avoid dragging dirt in. Alternately, a place to have kinky mud and jello wrestling foreplay.

  • It is basically a room that is off of your garage or laundry room to store coats, shoes, etc. The idea is that when you come in the house, your first stop is there.

That is what I have understood them to be.

  • What they said.

Mud rooms are kind of nice, but if I had the square footage, I'd want it used elsewhere.

I agree w/ this. There is one in the house we are renting and I think it is kind of stupid. I would rather have another small bedroom. Or a walk in closet. If we decide to buy this place I am tearing it down.

  • I'd love one. I never cared much, but as my kids get older and spend more time outside and have more junk, it would be awesome to have a place to dump their stuff. Right now they kick off their shoes in the kitchen and the area outside the garage is littered with stuff. My coat closet is around the corner and not convenient.

If we buy/build again, it's high on the my "dream" list for sure!

ETA: However, I would not want the washer/dryer in that room. I've gotten spoiled with that on the second floor!

  • I love mine!  Our room is actually a separate enclosure between our kitchen and the outside deck.  We stuff her stroller, water table, sand toys, shoes, watering can (I know this all sounds messy - but it is all organized and put away there).  I love having a little place like this because of garage is not attached.  It is at the end of our backyard.  Mud rooms are not common here - only in older homes.  Mine is from 1929.

  • When I get finished with the rest of the painting, I'm going to make an area for things like that at my back door. It will include a coat hanger... that's about it.

My dream entrance.  Seriously love this!  But I live where shoes come off the second you walk in the door and it's winter 7 months of the year so mud, wet, and other crap invades your house pretty quickly.  Add that we want 6 kids and it's also going to be a lot of coats, shoes, boots and stuff.

When we build, we will be having an entrance similar to this!

  • I would LOVE one.  I remember how much stuff my siblings and I had when we got home from school or practice and how we would kind of hurl it all over our house.  Then my mom would get home from work and basically cattle prod us all to pick it up.  Backpacks, band instruments, sports bags, cleats.  It would be really nice to have one place where all that "dirty" stuff could go where it wouldn't clutter up a person's bedroom.
  • the idea is to have a room to put shoes and things in so that it doesnt track into the house, which i guess makes sense. we don't have one. i wouldn't say no if someone offered to add one on to my house for me :) but it's probably not my dream amenity...
  • I would love one too. Right now we have main floor laundry just off the garage door (like, you walk through the laundry room to get out to the garage). I would like to move the laundry to the basement sometime and make that room a boot room.

  • If I ever get to design my house from scratch, it will have one.  Other than that, I wouldn't miss it unless I lived somewhere that was especially rainy or where it snowed.
  • Hah!  How did I not realize how old this thread is?

Someone was googling mud rooms today I supppose.

  • What's happening here.  I thought I had gone back in time.

  • We have one that you walk into from the garage. It has a washer and dryer, hooks for coats, a closet and a 2 shelfs for shoe storage.

  • We have one & it's turned into a hoarders wet dream. We don't have a garage so a lot of stuff gets stored in there. Plus my husband keeps his desk & computer out there. It's fairly large but the floors are raw cement & I've been bugging DH to clean it up & put the carpet I bought for it down. We'll see if that every happens. I might have to go apeshit & do it myself.

What the fluck is going on in here?

suepotter found this (original post date is June something) and commented on it which made it jump to the top of the board. CG is the OP, so people thought she had "come back" and then some other people just want to talk about mud rooms.
