EC questions

Hi all :) I've never posted here, but I just bought Cole a potty and I'm really wanting to get him potty trained sooner rather than later. He doesn't like to have a wet diaper, and never has, and I'm starting to notice he's pausing everything he's doing when he's about to pee, and bowel movements are pretty obvious lol. Any tips for early potty training at one? I'm not really sure what I'm doing! TIA!

Re: EC questions

  • I would start with putting him on the potty when he first wakes up in the morning and after nap times.  Since he's already giving you cues (pausing) when he's going, it will make it that much more easier.  Make a sound when he goes (whatever you want, but be consistent) so he associates that with going when he's on the potty.  EC is the best, my almost 8 month old hasn't pooped in a diaper in almost 3 months, makes cloth diapering a breeze!

  • Ditto PP on pottying after naps. I encourage you to read the book Diaper Free Baby which has tips on starting EC at various ages. 1+ is the hardest age to start actual EC, but since you LO is cuing you so strongly--go for it!  (For the record, EC is a different mentality than potty 'training'. EC is truly is about communication that relates to these functions and is on the child's timeline.)

I actually downloaded the sample of that book last night! I wasnt sure if I wanted to pay the 11 bucks for it, but since you're reccommending it I will. I'd like him to be diaper free by 18 months,

Should I just let him be naked all the time, do pull ups? Try to ripe the diaper off of him  really fast after his naps? Lol

This is a key point. You probably won't succeed and will get frustrated with your child if you intend to have him potty trained by 18 months old. ECing isn't potty training, it's offering your child the opportunity to avoid soiling oneself. I often have to take a step back and stop offering the potty so that my daughter can regain control over her own elimination needs. She senses when I want to be in control and totally refuses to potty.
