  • Personally I wouldn't be comfortable keeping my babe close to an electric water heater. The "what if's" are too much for me.

Thats so true but my DH put the idea in my head that it's just a space we can put the baby things in I'm due the end of november 2012 and my lease is up in February so it's or long term and everyone is telling me baby will most likely not even sleep in crib that baby will be in the bassinet next o the bed first months cause all the late night feedings so I'm very confused

  • Baby can stay in the bassinet till he/she can start to pull themself up. So you have a couple months in the bassinet. I would hold off on even putting the crib together if you will be moving. It's just going to take up space and you don't need to use it if you have the bassinet.

  • I wouldn't put the baby near a hot water heater, I am honestly surprised that it is in your closet with stuff on it. I don't see why you couldn't put baby items in the closet- I just wouldn't leave my baby in there.

Maybe you should get a mini pack and play for the months before your lease is up? It has a small bassinet on top and then you can use the pack and play part when your baby gets too big for the bassinet.  The mini one is nice too because it fits through doorways, so you can move it around the house easily.

  • I don't know about putting the actual baby in a space with a hot water heater, but his/her things should be fine. One of my favorite websites has posted on this topic before. Sorry, I don't know how to make a clicky.

  • I wouldn't do that.  Most people keep a new baby in a bassinet next to the bed for several months after birth.  It makes it easier for feedings and things at night.  I think that would be much safer than putting baby next to the water heater.  I have heard of people doing this too but I'm guessing it would be without the water heater in the same room.
  • Another reason for not making it a nursery is because there really is no good air flow in a closet (even a walk-in), and your baby could get overheated, and that it could be a higher risk for SIDS. Plus, I think it's kind of weird to put a nursery in a closet...but yes, your baby's things can go in there.

  • I wouldn't put the baby near the water heater, because they have a temperature/pressure release safety valve that could potentially send scalding hot water/steam spraying all over the place.

I'd also move the stuff you have on it, off. It's a hazard.

Ditto to everyone else, get a PnP & put it in your room. We lived in a TINY apartment when SD was little, & we set a PnP up between my side of the bed & the wall for her to sleep in. It wasn't the most convenient, but it worked for a short term solution.

  • I just brought the idea of keeping the baby in our walk in closet up to my DH a couple of days ago! I am a horribly light sleeper, and thought maybe having LO in a seperate, yet connected room might help us all out in the beginning.

That being said, I would have concerns putting baby in a closet with a water heater in it, too risky IMO.

  • Putting anything on a hot water heater is a hazard. Just sayin'.

If you're talking about actually putting the baby in there, I'd be more worried about ventilation than the water heater, personally. Closets aren't known for being well ventilated.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm defintily going to think about this again. Maybe just to set up the space for the baby just for the fact that's like our family tradtion to make room for baby in your home with your family but as far as me putting baby in the crib to sleep will not happen I'll just use all the excuses for my DH to let the baby sleep next to our bed

  • If the baby isn't going to sleep in there, I don't see the problem.  But, I don't think it's safe (water heater or not) for a baby to sleep in a closet due to fire hazards.  What if there is a fire - no window for rescue??
