If you take LO running in the stroller...

What sort of safety concerns should I express to DH? He took DD out with him this morning and they've been gone at least an hour now. I worry about him when he's alone but even more so now that it looks like he'll want to start taking DD with him. And what do you take along for LO - entertainment, drink, food, diaper, weather wise? Thanks!

Re: If you take LO running in the stroller...

  • We've just recently worked our way back up to 3 or 4 mile stretches, so the longest we have been out total is just under an hour.  Sometimes she falls asleep, but usually she just looks around and talks to me.  I take a sippy cup with water for her, and slather her in sunscreen (which as of yesterday was not helpful) and off we go.  I guess the scenery is entertainment, because she has done really well so far.  We talk back and forth a lot though about the things that we see.  I also have a stroller fan that I ordered from amazon that helps keep her cool.  It's been in the 90s here for a couple weeks now, so we go out as early as possible to avoid the worst sun.  My goal is to do another half marathon this fall, this time with her too!

  • Sippy, book, and a small stuffed toy.  I will usually run then take the dogs for a walk afterwards so an hour max thus far. Like pp environment seems to keep her entertained. I change her before we go in hopes of her being set for th whole trip.

  • I run with DD in the jogging stroller every other day and I only bring some things to entertain her with (I do keep teething biscuits with me b/c those entertain her more than toys sometimes!). We usually jog around 6:30 pm, so I don't have to bother with sunscreen and I feed her dinner beforehand so that she's ready for bed shortly after we get home. I don't bring diapers or anything like that. I change her before we go and right when we get back.

I have a rain shield that zips up over the stroller that I put in the storage basket if the weather looks questionable.

I don't like to give A a lot of stuff because she tends to throw stuff overboard! So I bring water but put it in the pouch in back and give it to her when we stop to stretch. Also I make sure I always wear the wrist strap on my jogger. I like to run in public areas especially with the baby and with the stroller I do pavement (although I much prefer running on dirt since its better on the joints). I try to do runs during nap time because she falls asleep on the run. And if it's sunny of course a hat and sunscreen!

  • DD and I usually do 3-4 miles each morning. The longest I've run with her is 8 miles, when she was 2 months old, and it wasn't easy. Now that she is older, she stays awake for the whole run. She LOVES looking at dogs that pass by and just really enjoys being outside. All I take with us is water for me, water for her, and my phone. If its raining or might rain, I take the Weather Shield so she doesn't get wet. Most strollers have a place for small stuff so if you are worried you could take toys or diapers or whatever. As for toys, they usually go overboard during the run and I don't see it happen so we have to back-track to find the lost lovey.

As for safety, my biggest concern is intersections because its hard for me to see without pushing DD out too far. Bumpy sidewalks are a pain, but LO will be fine with them. Just make sure she is strapped in tight. TBH, my DD is still small enough that the shoulder straps don't fit tight but the hip straps do so she isn't going anywhere. GL!

We have a BOB Revolution.  It has a 70lb limit.

When I walk/ jog with my dogs Maya is in her stroller for 1- 1.5 hours.  She usually does fine just looking around or sleeping.  Occasionally we have to cut things short b/c she's not happy.  I give her a couple toys and a sippy with water, and lots of sunscreen.  Our stroller has a pretty big canopy which keeps her largely in the shade.  She doesn't always play with the toys (and they do get thrown overboard sometimes) but I'd rather her have them and not use them than be bored.
