Question about pnps and mattresses

With O we hardly ever used our pack & play. We pretty much only used it while we were moving and maybe like 2 other times. So its basically brand new. I know I am very much jumping the gun here but I am thinking about where we can have the new LO sleep.

So DH and I are thinking about just using the pack and play for the new LO. It will take up much less space then another full size crib and its one less thing to buy. The only thing I think I would want if a baby was sleeping in a pack and play full time is a better mattress. If I buy one it will be this one https://www.colgatekids.com/store/products/porta-crib-matress-pad/ because I love O's Colgate mattress (she has the Classica III ? Dual Zone) and when I did my research I really liked this company.

So my question is has anyone used a mattress like this in a pack and play for full time sleeping?

If so is you LO still sleeping in their pack and play?

We have some crib sheets that fit on the thin board like bottom "mattress" of the pnp would these fit something like this? If not what do you use?

Do you still put the board like mattress in and then put the new mattress on top  or just put in the new mattress?

Re: Question about pnps and mattresses

  • As far as I understood, the regular pnp mattress/board is just fine.  Personally, I wouldn't buy anything else.  Maybe I'm cheap like that.  But for newborns, I don't think you really need a "good mattress".  Besides, isn't the only rule pretty much the firmer the better?

Ya I am know the mattress/board is fine I have just fell bad the few times O has slept in it knowing she used to a nicer bed. Also the mattress I linked is only like $43 on amazon so don't think its too much to pay. Trust me I am cheap also and would try to find it used before buying it new. And I think I would wait till I dropped the mattress down from the bassinet height on the pack and play so I am thinking like way way ahead and not like 1st night at home.

  • My DS has been sleeping in a pack and play since we moved him out of his bassinet.  We had the pack and play in our bedroom and we moved the pack and play into his bedroom about a month ago.  That went well, so we plan to move him into his crib soon.  My main concern about moving him into his crib is bumping his head (and subsequent screaming!), but I think we will work through it this weekend.

I would be concerned about adding another mattress in the pack and play since the pack and play was not designed for an additional mattress.

     Good Luck!

  • I agree that pack n plays look uncomfortable for sleeping full time!  The bottom is too thin and bumpy, IMO.

We bought this Summer Infant Playard Essentials kit at Babies R Us that includes a mattress that fits perfectly in our pnp:

It's thinner than the Colgate one you linked too (since it folds up), but it's nice and firm like LO's regular crib mattress and definitely a step up from not using one at all.  We use ours whenever we're traveling.

Does the Colgate mattress say it will fit in a pnp?  Just wondering.  I'm not sure if portable cribs are a different size than pnp's offhand.  You could also buy a portable crib and the Colgate mattress if the mattress doesn't work with a pnp.  One of my friends uses a portable crib like this full time and it takes up a lot less room than a regular crib too:

  • Also, just thought I'd let you know how we plan on avoiding buying a second crib:

My two will be 16 months apart and the new baby will sleep in a bassinet for the first 5 months or so (this is what we did with LO too).  This way LO can stay in her crib and baby can be in our room in the beginning.  LO will be about 21 months old when baby will need the crib, so we'll transition her to a toddler bed at that point.

    Just another idea!

DS wouldn't sleep in a pack and play. We had it set up in our room when he came home, and he hated it. My mom brought over a 'car bed' from the 80s lol which is shaped like a bassinet and small like that too, just portable so we put it in the pnp, on the floor, in our bed etc. my mom told me I could wash the pad for the car bed, and it ruined it, so we got the summer infant rest assured sleeper, which we were also able to put wherever. Its portable, won't slip on your bed, and we used it to transition DS to his crib when we were done co sleeping and it was wonderful.

In the beginning for you, I wouldn't do the mattress. I would just use the pnp mattress, and see how it goes. Sometimes babies don't fit exactly into how we planned, and they hate what we pick lol.
