Help me out? (beer related)

My H and I aren't beer drinkers. But I was just advised by my doctor and Lactation consultant to drink a beer every night to help my milk supply. Doc said the darker the beer the better.

The problem is that I have NO idea what beers are dark and what aren't! Can you give me suggestions of some "girly" dark beers that won't make me vom? Thanks! =)

  • They mean something like Guiness. I can't guarentee you wont gag though, I hate beer of all kinds. Try some oatmeal too. It worked to up my supply, the old fashioned kind.

Try anything with Stout in the name. They are super thick in terms of beer, so maybe go to a nice store and ask for a recommendation of something tasty. Personally, I REALLY LIKE Guinness (but I am not a chick...). Try it and you may be surprised.

  • Guinness or Murphy's Stout.  My wife likes Murphy's more....

I'd recommend a nice porter or oatmeal stout. Porters in particular often have hints of chocolate flavor.  Guiness is an ok choice; it's widely available and you might be able to buy it in bigger packs and save some money. But if you're new to beer, I see not reason not to start out with something nice and fancy and work your way down the chain. Samuel Smith makes a nice Oatmeal stout you could try, Young's has a nice yummy double chocolate stout. Neither of those are cheap options though. I'm not sure what region you are in. I'm a huge fan of Deschutes Brewery's Obsidian Stout, but they're a West Coast beer. But seriously, anything that says "Porter" on it is likely to be dark and not *too* bitter, with hints of sweetness.

  • Founders Breakfast Stout, if you can find it, tastes like Saturday/Sunday morning on the deck. You could try a a darker beer too instead of going total stout work your way into a darker beer trying some darker IPA or some reds.  Maybe a Newcastle to start you off towards darker stuff.

  • I like Bell's Porter a lot and Guiness and Bells Two Hearted. I see my supply increase a ton when I have a beer. Just remember to test or wait to make sure milk is safe for LO.
  • For a girly dark beer, try Raspberry Brown Ale by Lost Coast Brewery. It's another west coast brewery, but they seem to be everywhere. They are the makers of Tangerine Wheat, Downtown Brown (another dark), and Great White.
  • I will second the Lefthand suggestion above but amend it to this: Try their Milk Stout Nitro. Make sure its the nitro because it tastes likechocolate milk. It comes in six packs of bottles and is so good.

  • All I saw was beer. Add Guiness and Strongbow together OP. 1/2 and 1/2. Or a Lambic, raspberry or cherry worked well for me.
  • Check out Newcastle Ale. My wife and I love it. Very mild darker English beer.

Left Hand Milk Stout is delicious

Damn you, dads board.  If you're going to to talk about beer can we please do it on parenting so I don't feel like I"m crashing your party?

Is 9 a.m. on Tuesday too early for beer?

I'll have to look for this the next time I'm beer shopping at a real bottle house.

    It's 5 PM somewhere, right?
