Let's talk about Pineapple

One of my pregnant coworkers asked me how I was holding up and I told her that decaf black teas (lemon and orange flavored) and pineapple have really be helping with my morning sickness.  She immediately told me to do some more research on pineapple, but everything I had read before said it was okay.  The Mayo Clinic book recommended it as a fruit for crying out loud and my doctor's didn't mention staying away from it!

I've since read online that it can induce labor, but that it is mainly an old wive's tale.  Also, fresh pineapple has the enzyme that can soften the cervix while canned does not.  I've been eating the Dole's pineapple cups which I think are packaged similarly to canned so they've been heated the enzyme effectively denatured since they need to have a longer shelf life.

Sigh - so what are your thoughts on pineapple?  Just when I think I'm doing the right thing...

  • This is what I found...

Yes, it is perfectly safe to eat pineapple in small quantities during pregnancy although there is a slight risk that eating too much can cause contractions in the uterus.

Pineapple contains an ingredient known as Bromelain. This ingredient can actually make the cervix soften, but only when ingested at very high levels.

  • Pesonally I've never read/heart anything negative bad about pineapple since getting pregnant with DD and throughout.  I feel like when you become a mom you have a network of 300 moms who tell you what to eat and not to and none of them have mentioned abstaining from Pineapple at all either!  Wouldnt that also only be a worry even if true at the very end when the cervix might be more likely to be ready but not quite?  I mean as I understand it your cervix is pretty well closed before you get to the end.. Thats just my little thoughts

This. The bormelain is concentrated in the core (the woody part). For 5 days following our embryo transfer, I was told to eat 1/5 of a pineapple with one bite of the core. The bromelain is said to help with implantation, but following those 5 days, if I eat pineapple to do so but avoid the core.

  • I think that pineapple is a fruit that isn't going to cause you harm.

Should you eat an entire pineapple in one sitting? Probably not.  Most likely because the tummy ache that would follow would not be worth it.

  • My midwife actually suggested it as a great fruit to help with m/s. I think it is fine as long as you eat it in moderation.

  • If your baby or your body are not ready for labor it won't get into labor with pineapple, or sex, or nursing etc.

  • Thanks for all your thoughts on this everybody!  I shouldn't be so panicky about stuff, but there you go.  It really does help with m/s so I'll stick with a small amount when the mood strikes me.

  • I've been eating it fresh, once a day for at least the past week.  Cervix is fine :)
  • Unless your cervix is ready and your body is set to go into labor, eating pineapple will NOT send you into labor. All of these "eat this, drink that" nonsense that people tell you to do in order to start labor is just pure coincidental.

    Enjoy your pineapple!

  • I've been having pineapple almost every day!! At least a cup of it fresh blended to make a smoothie!!  I didn't think there was anything wrong with it.

I did notice my tongue gets itchy afterwards; but I thought perhaps that was just a new allergy forming?

  • When I was 41 weeks pregnant in a July heat wave, I was willing to try any OWT to get the baby out. I ate tons of pineapple. It didn't do a thing!

  • Once I hit my due date last time I ate pineapple daily.  A whole cored pineapple.... I went 11 days past due Embarrassed so if it doesn't work on purpose I doubt the pineapple cup you eat will do any harm!

  • I think pineapple is yummy, and it quenches my thirst when I eat it, so I have a small cup of pineapple pieces every other day or so.  I get it in the little cups in its own juices from Dole, and it's great.
