Hi, I am generally more of a lurker, but I was wondering if anyone else had gotten a phone call from their insurance company?
She said she was a nurse case manager and was providing me a free service from my insurance company. Then asked if I had just a couple minutes to answer a few questions. I said yes, and she asked a few very simple questions and said she was going to keep in contact with me until my birth and a little afterwards. She also asked if I had any questions (pregnancy wise), and also referred me to their website that talked about case management...which didn't really tell me anything to be honest.
I guess I don't really mind, as it might be nice to have another resource of knowledge if I ever had a question, but it does seem a little suspicious for some reason. Maybe because it's coming from the insurance company and not my doctor? Should I be leery or am I over thinking this? My pregnancy has been very uneventful thus far, and this is my first, so it just seems weird to have obviously shown up on some list to call and check up on? My sister has the same insurance company and never received any calls in her two pregnancies.
Is this normal? I am just wondering if I should continue taking calls from a nurse case manager I don't really know, you know? I mean, I have a doctor for a reason.
Re: Random case management call?
My suggestion is contact the insurance company directly. Better to check with them and see what their response is.
I haven't received any calls from anyone related to my insurance company, but I'm also the first in my whole district to have a kid in many years, so no one else to ask (company switched insurance a year and a half ago)
While I haven't gotten any calls during my pregnancy, I use to get them to keep an eye on my depression. They would call and ask questions about how I'm feeling an things like that. The calls stopped because the company I work for changed insurance.
I think they do it to help head off potential problems. Like if you were currently smoking they would offer ways to help you stop so your baby doesn't suffer potential side effects. It's cheaper to help someone stop smoking than potentially provide health services for complications.
When in doubt call the insurance company.
Like a PP said, it's probably just a way to head off any problems. I worked as an in-home case manager and therapist as well as for a Community Support Program and we would get calls from Nurse Case Managers about people they felt could benefit from extra services. It's just to help make sure you're being taken care of. If you're unsure, call your insurance, but know that it's not uncommon.
I believe someone called DH (the insurance holder) during my last pregnancy and said they were going to send information (they did) and gave him a number to call for any questions.
This exactly - I have Aetna though.
Yup this is normal. I would also ask about what other benefits they offer. With this pregnancy so far I have received books and magazines and at the end of the pregnancy they offer $300 to spend on breast feeding supplies, a gym membership, exercise classes; health related stuff. During my last pregnancy participating in the "Healthy Baby" program made you automatically eligible to have all your hospital room and board charges paid for!
