521 calls to 911 in 4 days!

I work in law enforcement and also dispatch.  This past weekend, we kept getting 911 hang ups from the same two numbers in the same area.  Sometimes, there was children on the other line, being very vulgar and nasty.

The first time we went out there, the parents were extremely uncooperative and basically told us "It's not coming from here, leave us alone."

After getting the call another 20 or so times, we went out again and the mother refused to speak to the officer and said "You are going to keep getting them."  Then, the mother started calling in and mocking the dispatchers.

This basically continues through Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  All in all a total of 521 911 calls from these numbers.

When they went out yesterday, the mother denied knowing her kids were doing it and said she had not participated in any of the calls (they are still going through some of the calls to see if they prove it was her).  They ended up doing pick up (basically the same thing as a warrant for a juvenile) orders on the kids, two of which were in their teens and the other I think was like 11 or 12.

I just can't believe the parents were the way they were about it.  Anyways, that was the most exciting thing that happened over the weekend and I was fine with it.  I'm just glad it's done with it!

  • A lot of people don't realize that even if the phone is not activated, that if it still has a SIM card in it, it call 911.  We get a lot of calls like that where when we call them back, they say "Oh, I let my kid play with my old cell."

Our agency's policy is to respond to every 911 we get, unless we are able to make contact back with an adult, who says they are okay and do not need our assistance.   This includes 911 from cell phones, which is the majority of the calls we get.

I do hope they do something with the parents.  I am hoping they do!

  • That is absolutely ridiculous and I can't believe people really act like that and have no concern for wasting the officers time.  People are so dumb.

I didn't know this, but I've always wondered.

  • When we accidentally set off our house alarm or fire alarm, the police or fire department has the option of fining us $100.  They have always given us a courtesy of two free false alarms a year before they actually kick in the fine, so we've never been charged.  (We seem to average one false alarm every other year or so.). Wouldn't it be great if they could do the same for false and disruptive 911 calls.  That family should be presented with a bill for $52,000.

  • That's ridiculous. The few times I've called by accident, I always apologize quickly but profusely. That's not something to f-around with.

  • Don't they get charged a fine, too?

I think I know why the kids are so vulgar and crazy... if their parents don't seem to give a rat's patootie.

  • There is no action you guys can do?  A fine? Police harassment?  False reports?

  • That is ridiculous! 911 isn't a joke. It's not funny to tie up a line while someone is calling who might be seriously injured or in an incredibly dangerous situation. I can't believe people raise kids like that!
  • I get the feeling the apple doesn't fall far from that tree.

  • Is being drawn & quartered too harsh a punishment?
  • Everytime you fake a 911 call, you possibly delay someone else getting through. Regardless of whether or not the parents knew, all the kids should have been picked up, and the parents should have received a fine per call.

Some of the PDs in our county, charge for the false alarms or if your alarms are not registered.  Our SO does not charge for false alarms.
