TTC after 35

Another thing I learned from my RE that maybe interesting...

I asked him about my being overweight (70 pounds!) and if that may have been a contributing factor to my delay in getting pregnant.

He said that all the research shows that being overweight only affects fertility when it's connected to insulin resistance, which shuts down the ovaries and keeps you from ovulating.

Sooooo.... if any of you are a little fluffier than is ideal, like I am, and were worrying about that as a possible concern (like I was), then you can know that if you are definitely ovulating-- per your chart, OPKs, etc.-- your weight is not a factor.

And you can eat a cupcake or run a marathon or whatever you feel like doing.

If you're not ovulating, then you can ask your doc about testing you for insulin resistance (H1AC)...

  • He was talking about PCOS.  Fortunately I don't really deal with the weight issues or any outward symptoms, although, I'd love to lose ~15 lbs. :-)

  • Actually, he wasn't-- I asked him. Different process, but sometimes related. Which makes sense, since blood glucose is actually an oxidant-- which is why diabetics end up blind, with neuropathy, etc...

I just re-read my post and it sounds snarky. I meant to type, "surprisingly, he wasn't."

  • That is interesting and encouraging - thx for sharing! I get tired of reading that 20-24 is the ideal BMI # for reproducing............ :)
  • They are learning more about IR and fertility everyday. It's definitely related for me..the higher blood insulin levels that are the issue in a case like mine.  My body just doesn't process it like it should.  There's really so much they don't know and differing opinions on how it's even diagnosed and what is PCOS and what isn't. It's a bit frustrating really.  ok, vent over :P

I'm glad he eliminated the issue for you, as there are other health issues that are related to it.

    What the what?

I have (fasting) insulin resistance (no PCOS), yet ovulate regularly.

I have IR with PCOS and I've dealt with annovulation in the past.  Now I do ovulate predictably on my own...even got KU twice.  Like I said, lots of differing opinions out there on IR, fertility, andd PCOS.

  • Thats good to know.  I'm overweight but I don't have pcos and my glucose numbers are always good and I always ovulate.  My doctor never even mentioned weight as a factor for me getting pg or the m/c's but I have wondered myself if that contributed.  I have been losing weight slowly though and I think it definitely can't hurt.
TTC since Dec. 2010. Me: 37, DH: 38...unexplained RPL

  • I agree-- there's so much that goes into conception and pregnancy, it's amazing anyone ever gets pregnant and carries a baby to term! The human female reproductive system is a bastion of inefficiency! I just always hear how every complication can be connected to being overweight and it was so disheartening to hear/read. It's nice to know that those statements are not set in stone as biological laws...

  • Interesting! I have about 20 more to lose (about 10 lbs above BMI) but I have been ovulating every month regardless of weight.
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • Thank you. I too am "fluffier" than the ideal...but--I am going the opposite way, all of the ttc drama has caused me to gain. One more reason for my ttc emotional roller coaster...well now I don't feel so bad at all....

I am still trying to get back on my health kick. Anything to help speed this process along...this helps me feel better about the process.

  • It IS interesting!  I hate hearing about "Get to your IDEAL weight before you TTC".  I don't think BMI charts are accurate in determining ones ideal weight because we are all built so differently.  I hate trying to be a number.

Don't even get me started on how ridiculous the BMI is! All it calculates is your height and weight. It doesn't take into account bone density, frame size, boob size (DDs weigh 8-10 pounds!), and muscle mass. It was invented by New York Life Insurance company YEARS ago.

I have to stop this post now or I'll get on a HUGE soap box! LOL
