night feedings question

When your LO wakes up at night, do you wait until they cry to pick them up and feed them, or do you respond when you see/hear hunger cues? My DD will wake up and grunt and start sucking on her hands etc. I have been picking her up and feeding her because I can tell she's hungry, but I'm wondering if this is a bad idea. I wonder if I'll create a waking habit if I jump right on top of her every time she makes a noise. What do you do?

  • I wait till hes crying that way he is awake enough to where he doesnt fall back asleep in the middle of eating. Bc if he does then hes just gonna wanta eat again in an hour, not a fun night that way.

  • I usually feed her and put her back down right away. I let her self soothe and put herself to sleep a bit at night. I don't put her down 100% asleep at night. It works.

However, it never works during the day...

  • I feed with hunger cues because if he cries he'll wake his toddler brother and then I have two crying babies to take care of.  I have found he goes back to sleep easier than his brother who I waited for him to cry before going to him.

Same as this...he goes right back to sleep if I don't wait for him to be full out crying

  • I wait until she's really fussy, but not all out crying.  If I fed her every time she gave a hunger cue, I'd be feeding her 24/7.  She loves to suck for comfort at any opportunity.

  • I wait until he cries but he doesn't start out crying hysterically.  He doesn't wake up hungry with subtle cues, he just cries...Haha.  So I snatch him up, change his diaper and feed him.  He always falls asleep right after a feeding though.  There have been times, very early in the morning he will wake up with a little grunting and sucking noises about an hr after eating.  I tried putting a paci in his mouth and this will usually soothe him back to sleep.  If he was hungry he would get pissed and then cry.

  • I wait because DD HATES waking up - she fights it forever and makes a ton of noises, but until she's actually awake she won't nurse anyway.

  • He has to be truly awake and whining a bit...any sooner and I run into him still sleeping/being too asleep to latch on.  When I am working on getting a feeding pushed back a bit I wait until fully crying before feeding so that the next night he tends to wake slightly later.

  • DD will usually start grunting and squirmingand flailing her arms. She also does this weird grunt/cough when she's hungry. I get her out of bed and change her diaper, since it's usually wet and that Wales her up enough to eat properly. The other noises that she makes at night I know she's making in her sleep, because she does the same thing when she maps during the day.

This for me too. She usually doesn't fall asleep while feeding, but if she does, I just burp her and offer her the other breast. I'm all business at night ;)
