induction advice/stories

I went to my doctor today and there isn't much progress. I'm 1/2 cm dilated and 90% effaced. My due date is this Monday. He scheduled me for an induction a week from now, next Wednesday. Hopefully my baby will come before then. I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone else have any advice for me or would like to share their induction story so I know what to expect?

Re: induction advice/stories

  • Is there any reason he scheduled an induction?  That's kind of early, isn't it?

  • Is it too early? I'll be 40 weeks and 3 days. There are a couple of things that are off. My blood cell counts have been getting more and more abnormal each week and my baby just started having PACs (premature atrial contractions). Both are not huge deals but delivering should resolve the PACs and help my abnormal blood cell counts get back to normal.
  • Thanks you for sharing. Why was it a difficult induction? I'm thinking maybe he's leaning towards induction because of the tiny issues with myself and the baby. I wrote it above. Hmmmm....
  • I was induced monday at 6am.  I went in and they started me on a regular iv of fluids then started pitocin a hour later.  Dr. broke my water a couple of hours later.  I got an epi a couple of hours later and then DD was born at 1:45 after 10 minutes of pushing and barely a 1 degree tear.  She and I are home and doing fantastic :)

I don't have any advice to give you because I'm still pregnant too! :) I'm hoping he decides to make his entrance sooner than later...but I just wanted to say that my doctor is talking induction if he doesn't make his appearance by 41 weeks because of his size.

  • Ive had 2 wonderful inductions. My first I was 39 weeks 4 days and induced only because I was ready and dilated to a 3 for like 2 weeks. Started pitocin at about 7 am and out son pretty much crawled out at 3:21 pm with one tiny little tear that needed one stitch. I was induced with out daughter Monday night with an unfavorable cervix. I was 40 weeks 5 days. I was dilated to almost a 2 but with a posterior cervix that was still thick. I started cytotec at midnight and the contractions were getting painful by about 5. I was set to start pitocin at 6 so I started requesting the epidural because I knew pitocin might make them way worse. Long story short I only needed pitocin for about 20 minutes. Epidural at 6:30 am. After the nurses hanged shifts at 7 the new nurse checked me to find that I was 7 cm dilated. Went to fully dilated in 10 minutes then another 10 minutes my water broke on its own. My doc barely made it and I pushed twice with no tearing at all. My babies were 7 lb 15 oz and 7 lb 4 oz so definitely not tiny ones! Good luck! Inductions can go well!

  •   I was induced last week (6/12) at 41.5 weeks. We checked in to the hospital at 9 pm and they started a cervix ripening agent at about 10:00 p.m. Over the course of the night, this got lots of mild contractions going, but not enough to really make any progress, so Pitocin was started around 8:00 am.  My doctor was great about going up each 30 minutes in slow increments so as not to over do it.  We settled at 9 (ml?) by early afternoon and I was in active labor.  I chose to go without an epidural and with the help of my husband and the hospital doulas we hired I was able to do so, but I was prepared to get it if my labor stalled/I got too tired, or if it was medically necessary.

From the time my active labor began until my baby was born was about 7 or 8 hours.  Doctor broke my water when I got to about 8 or 9 centimeters (it was also my request not to break them earlier) and everything went really smoothly.  Inductions have a bad rap and I was really uneasy going into it, but I'm proof positive they can go well and you can have an amazing birth experience!  Best wishes to you, you'll have your life-changing newborn in your arms before you know it.

  • 40 weeks and 3 days is not too early for an induction!! I was induced with my first one at 39 weeks 2 days. I was 1 cm dilated when I went in and was 60% effaced. I was in labor for 16 and 1/2 hours. I pushed for about an hour. I got an epidural early and did not feel most of my labor. It went well though and I am scheduled for induction again with my little one now at 39 weeks 0 days and I am looking forward to it!!

I share this story in hopes that is helos you. Not everyones induction is like mine but I wanted you to know that they are not all horrible either!!
