Need help with new nap problem. Babbling instead of sleeping.

We read the Ferber book and have been using the method pretty successfully but I returned it to the library so I need some help.

I remember what it said about if they cry during naps - to go in at the set intervals and go ahead and get them up if it goes on for more than 1/2 hour. But what about when they are just babbling or lightly fussing? What do I do if I put her down drowsy and then she spends 30 minutes of naptime in the crib talking to her paci? Please help!

  • Why are you concerned? Does she eventually fall asleep?

I'm concerned because she goes on and on and on and I'm not sure when I should just call it quits and get her up. I've let her do this for as long as 45 minutes with no end in sight. I'm not sure if it would go on for hours or if she'd fall asleep and I'm I'm not looking forward to finding out. I'd have a hard time listening to her fuss even lightly for an hour. I'm asking how long other people would leave her in her crib babbling or fussing.

  • Is she babbling or fussing? I'd say give up after an hour of fussing, but babbling, I'd leave alone. However, you might want to adjust your nap schedule.

I only wish she were on a nap schedule. We try to put her down around the same times every day when she's showing signs on getting sleepy - rubbing eyes, fussing etc. Usually it's fine. But every once in a while she just will not go to sleep. We get her up, she plays a bit and then starts rubbing her eyes and whining again. I'm at my wits end. Thanks for your suggestion.

Three. Most of the time. I feel like an idiot that we don't have a set schedule but here's what we do (20 minute margin of error on either side)

    6:30 am - Wake Up

    8:30 am - First Nap

    11:00 am - Second Nap

    2:00 pm - Third Nap

4:00 pm -  Extremely Rare Fourth Nap (usually during teething or growth spurts)

    6:00 - pm 7:00 pm - Bedtime

  • She might be trying to drop the 3rd nap. That should happen around now if it hasn't happened already.

this exactly... try nap at 8:30 then try nap at 1pm. try to get 1.5 to 2 hour naps. most likely trying to drop the 3rd nap for sure!

    6:30 am - Wake Up

8:30 am - First Nap ( try to push this nap to start 8:45 then ultimately until 9:00)

11:00 am - Second Nap (eliminate this nap)

2:00 pm - Third Nap (Make this the second nap and start this nap at 1:30 assuming the first nap lasts from 9 to 10. Lets work on getting this nap to last from 1:30 to 3pm, then you would go from 3pm to 6pm bed time.)

4:00 pm -  Extremely Rare Fourth Nap (usually during teething or growth spurts) .... a 4th nap at this age is pretty much unheard of.

    6:00 - pm 7:00 pm - Bedtime

LOOK AT THE COMENTS I ADDED IN QUOTES ABOVE IN REGARDS TO YOUR SCHEDULE

When transitioning to 2 naps, for 2 weeks to about a month, you may have a very short occasional third nap just to hold LO over to bed time. At this age they should be able to have 3 hour wake period at least. Here is what my 8 month olds schedule is. Wake 5:30 to 7:45 or 8. Nap from 7:45 to 9:30 WAKE from 9:30 to 1:30 Nap from 1:30 to 3:30. BED 6:30.

  • Thank you everyone. We'll work on spacing out naps.
