Where do I start?

I think it's time I get #2 evaluated for possible ADHD.  I have thought about it often, but continued to convince myself it's something he'd grow out of.  Now that he'll be in "pre-school" next year (he's been in this same program since 2, they just spend this year getting ready for kindy), I want to know if it's something to be concerned about and take steps so that he'll have the best chance at excelling in school  (does that make sense?  LOL, it's a little stream of consciousness today).

The thing is, I don't know where to start.  His not-so-great-teacher last year had NO advice (other than to say he is very impulsive and a few other things), and the school is a private school, more daycare, not public or in our school district, so they don't have the resources to evaluate him.

Do I call his pedi?  Do I say that I want him evaluated?  I just feel clueless on this stuff (I can handle the medical issues with #3, but feel like a newbie dealing with anything else).

Thanks in advance for the advice and sorry for the annoying questions :D

Re: Where do I start?

  • I would call your local early intervention office. They would be able to direct you to next steps with scheduling an evaluation. HTH!!!

  • Early Intervention will not dx ADHD. They will evaluate him for delays in fine and gross motor, speech and social. He will be 3 in September? EI only services children under 3. You could ask your public school district to evaluate as well, but they will not give the medical dx of ADHD. I think I would start with the pedi.
  • He's actually 4 1/2 now, so I know I couldn't go through EI anymore.  I guess I'll call the pedi tomorrow.  I'd like to start at least an evaluation before the school year starts so we know if there is anything we need to do...

    Thanks, everyone! :)
