Let's talk about FOOD

Hi everyone,

I have  been very paranoid about what I can and can't eat. So can I eat: mayo, salmon, what cheeses are ok to eat? Every time I want a sandwich I am scared to get mayo. I know salmon is good to eat, but how much is a lot?

I love sandwiches and now since I can't eat cold cuts I don't want to always eat chicken sandwich. I love sweets and now even more I crave sweets! Does anyone have that?

Thanx :)

Re: Let's talk about FOOD

  • You should talk to your DR because what you can and cant eat really depends on who you ask.  When I asked my OB for an all inclusive list of food I couldnt eat he handed me a blank sheet of paper.  Ha!  He told me, "Everything in moderation is ok.  There are women in 3rd world countries eating trash off the streets having healthy pregnancies. If you want a turkey sandwhich eat one."

Now of course no drugs or alcohol but if we have to tell you that then we have bigger issues.Smile

  • Any cheese is fine as long as it is made from pasteurized dairy.  Read the package to be sure.  I still eat blue cheese and whatever else I like.

I have never heard of not eating mayo when pregnant....

Lunchmeats - the scare is Listeria...and listeria can be found in a lot of things, including on raw veggies.  I still eat lunchmeats -- but only when they are freshly sliced from my deli that I know is very clean and that day.  I don't eat them past the day I get them.  Some girls won't eat it unless it is heated, though.  I guess I am a risk taker - I also eat my steaks MR.

Some people love sushi...I don't, but did research it.  All sushi made in America is made from fish that has been frozen first, and the freezing kills all of the parasites/bacteria, etc, so it should be safe.

Here is the link to the American Pregnancy Association's take on Listeria:

I even heard some people not eating soft serve ice cream for fear of listeria....I would never have survived this long with out my ice cream!

  • The only thing I'm staying away from is alcohol.  I cut down on caffeine (but mostly because coffee is suddenly grossing me out).  Otherwise, I am still eating my lunch meat - it's the only way I get enough protein, cheeses, fish.  I think you should be fine...the risks are pretty small for you contracting something.

  • Cut out the processed/cured meats, they're crap for you regardless. Its super easy to make sandwiches out of regular meat you've recently cooked. Just heat it up before you put it on your sandwich. I heat up shredded leftover chicken, turkey or steak for about 20 seconds and it gets piping hot w/ out drying out. As for cheeses, stay away from moldy cheeses like blue cheese and make sure everything else has been pasturized which should be easy depending on where you live. I live in Oregon and we like our farm fresh raw dairy products here so occasionally at healthfood stores or high end restaurants I'll double check but for the most part you'll be hard pressed to find anything that's not pasturized. If you eat wild salmon from the Pacific, it should be fine and you can have it up to 3x/week. Try not to eat farmed fish. If you want a tuna fish sandwich, the cheap chunk type is lower in mercury than he more expensive albacore and mayo is totally fine!

If you're eating out, don't sweat it, just relax and enjoy yourself. Stay away from raw fish in sushi/sashimi, I still eat sushi all the time, but I eat fish that has been cooked and go to reputable restaurants unlike when I'm not pregnant, I love the cheapo conveyer belt places :)

If you're craving sweets, make a big fruit salad and keep it in the fridge, also lots of oranges, strawberries etc. I don't know a single pregnant woman who doesn't crave sweets.

Haha! I USUALLY have the biggest sweet tooth known to man, but now that I'm pregnant I think all sweets are nasty. Btw the salad idea sounds delicious!

  • My OB told me cold cuts in moderation was ok.Soft cheeses are not good to eat, but I still eat cheddar. About craving sweets...I have been craving them like crazy, especially early on. It is getting better and I am eating more fruit, but I still want chocolate and ice cream! Good luck!
