C-sections

Questions for my OB

Last week I went in for my 36 week exam and my dr was concerned that my pelvic bones are too close together for me to deliver vaginally. This is a dr who is NOT csection happy and only does them if she fears for the health of mom or baby.  She said she was going to continue monitoring me to see what would happen, but it didn't seem like she thought the bones would spread significantly enough.  She said this was the tightest fit she had ever seen, so apparently Im pretty rare!

Anyway, today is my 37 week appt...what questions should I ask?  Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?  Ive seen a lot of people in this boat due to the size of the baby, but this is different, this is just how my body is!

Advice please!!

Re: Questions for my OB

  • My OB told me I had a convergent pelvis - but not until after I had labored for 12+ hours and pushed for more than 3, failed forceps, and then a c-section.  She said the size of my pelvis and the size of the baby (almost 9 lbs) were not a good match.  She said that I could try and VBAC the second time around but I'd most likely end up with another c-section so I just decided to have a repeat c/s.  Maybe ask your OB if he'll let you labor and see how things progress?

  • I agree with PP.  I had almost the same situation (minus the forceps) and have my rcs on Aug. 9th. I would ask if they would let you try labor, and if so, how long would they let you go before intervention. I would also ask when they would make a decision on c-section vs. trying.

  • I would get a new doctor, in all seriousness. At the very least, I would ask for a second opinion, preferably from someone from a different practice.

What's her personal c-section rate? Ask for hard numbers, not just when she has to do them. How big is your baby measuring? The chance of having true CPD is incredibly rare, and the chances of you being able to give birth vaginally are much much higher. Good luck!
