Breaking your water as induction?

Yesterday I went to see my OB for my 41 wk appointment. He said I was 2-3 cm, 90% effaced and 0 station. He also did a NST which came back with passing, but not stellar results. I go back in today for my fluid ultrasound.

After all that, my doctor suggested that I be induced on Thursday by having my water broken. He knows that I dont want a medicinal induction, and I cant have an epidural due to low platelets, so he feels that this is the lowest intervention way to get the baby out.

Yesterday, I thought it all made sense, but today Im starting to get nervous. Im worried that we are doing the induction too soon, and that once they break my water, I am on the clock, so a c-section becomes much more likely.

Does anyone have experience being induced by only having your water broken?

  • i was induced by having my water broken. I was 3cm, 70% effaced. They broke my water and instantly contractions started and were regular. I labored for 10 hours total. =) Good luck!

  • I would do that over Pitocin. I actually asked for it as I was induced, but I wasn't a candidate as baby was still at -3 and I had polyhydramnios so there was risk of prolapsed cord.

  • I'd prefer to have my water broken to start things if I have to be induced.  I don't think Cervadil would really amount to much with me considering I'm already 4 cm & 80% (if not more at this point).  I feel like it is the logical next step and hope it would get the ball rolling, versus going the route of pitocin.

  • I would wait as long as you can safely and then go for it.  It does start a 24-36 hour clock.  But, it sounds like you're already on a clock anyway.  If AROM does not get your contractions going, there's plenty of time to add pitocin to the mix.  If you get to 42 weeks, you have to do something.  I personally would rather go for the AROM and see if it will work out on it's own.

I started with a little bit of pit, because I was only 1cm.  Once she could get in there, she broke my water and things went very quickly from there (5-6 hours from 2cm to delivery).

  • I think you'll be fine. Honestly if you're already over 41 weeks then you can't wait more than a few days anyways, sometimes babies are just freeloaders and need some coaxing to get out.
