C-sections

Swollen Feet after c/s

Hello, I had my scheduled c-section last Wednesday and my legs and feet have been extremely swollen ever since.  I never really had swollen feet when I was pregnant and this is just awful. My mom was scared when I showed her my feet tonight. I have been staying off my feet for the most part and have them up most of the day. I read that this is common but wanted to know how long this lasted for everyone, if they had this. Thanks!

staying OFF your feet is the problem. You need to get moving. You have to walk every day, even if it's to the mailbox.

I had really swollen feet, too. In the hospital, my flip flops left marks! It lasted for about three days.

Are you drinking a lot of water as well?

  • Ditto jb2rn. You need to walk around. I walked to the mailbox, made nearly daily trips to Target or BRU and just tried to move around as much as was physically comfortable. As painful as it is, it does help reduce the swelling. Be sure to drink lots of water as well. My feet were so swollen that they looked like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man's feet. I normally wear a women's size 9.5 and had to buy some flexible men's slippers with hard soles in a size 12 just so I'd have something other than my fuzzy slippers to wear when we were out. The swelling lasted nearly three weeks (a couple of days shy) and then it disappeared overnight. I had gotten so used to my swollen feet that I barely recognized them when they were suddenly skinny again.

  • Mine lasted between 2-3 weeks. Like you I never swelled during pregnancy, so that was a real treat. Get moving and drink lots of water.

Are you taking pain meds still? If so that's very well part of the problem.

  • This was me exactly with my first two.  Feet never swelled during the pregnancy but got huge after the c-section.  It went away in a week or two.  I was told it was from all the fluids they pump you with for the procedure in combination with the pain pills.

  • Mine only lasted for a few days.
  • Yes! Common! Ditto on the water and getting moving. It took about 2 wks and then they just let go along with about 10 pounds of water retention. They pump you so full of fluids for your csection. It takes time for your body to realize it doesn't need this extra fluid anymore.

  • Mine lasted past 3 weeks.  I think now at 3.5 weeks its almost gone.  But I swelled horrifically during pregnancy and in general have a tendency to swell so maybe thats why I got hit by this pretty bad.

  • Mine lasted about 2 weeks. I got my OB to write me a RX for a water pill and it really helped. My from my waist down was swollen like 3 times normal size. I just cried and cried and it hurt so bad! I hope yours will go away soon.

  • Mine lasted just over a week. But then the only day I've taken pain pills was the day we got home from the hospital.
  • Mine was sooo bad.  Never had issues during, only after.  Lasted about 3 weeks.  keep your feet up at night.  Good luck!
  • I didn't swell much while pg but I swelled horribly from the waist down and it lasted a month. My feet/ankles/calves looked like water balloons and it was so painful.
