1st Trimester

A little dissapointed.

When I went for my first visit the nurse informed me that I will more than likely not be getting an ultrasound at my 8 week visit. I understand, I'm just a little saddened by it. With DD and DS we had ultrasounds and I was looking forward to it. Anyone else in the same boat? I'll still be getting one at 18 weeks. Just seems like a long wait. End of rambling. Stick out tongue

Re: A little dissapointed.

  • Interesting how the u/s seems to be rationed in some offices. I had a trans vag u/s at 6 weeks and then another at 8 weeks. Sorry that you have to wait. That little heartbeat is amazing!!

  • It depends on the doctor. Mine has an older machine that he can use any time. For any major ones he sent me to the hospital.
  • That's a really long wait!  Is it a change in your insurance or the doctor's policy?

  • I only got one with Max at 19 weeks. I am hoping for maybe one more this time, but I am not sure.

  • I am sorry you have to wait. It is difficult to have to wait so long. I have one next week at about 8 weeks. I am hoping and praying for a great one. My second pregnancy ended in a m/c at 7 weeks so I am hoping for this one!

  • Sorry you have such a long wait :(

I was shocked at my first appointment last time when they just took my blood and did an exam.  I literally gave my DR a confused look and said "thats it?!"  She asked me what I meant and I basically said you didn't even say yes you're pregnant or give an ultra sound.  I guess bc of TV I expected to go in and and see an ultrasound right off the bat. haha!   Luckily my DR is amazing and as she handed me my file to check out, she told me to stop by US and get one done :]

I had them frequently during my first pregnancy bc of gestational diabetes.

This time around my first appointment I got one bc I had a little spotting.  Measured 7 weeks and the time and got to hear the heartbeat.   Not sure if I will get as many this time, wait and see I guess.

    Best of luck to you!

  • I think ultrasounds vary by doctors offices. My office generally doesn't do one until 18-20 weeks, unless there is a problem or a question on dating. This is the only time I'm happy I have irregular cycles because it generally means I'll get an early ultrasound.

My docs office doesn't even do u/s in office. You have to go to the hospital to get them. Since I was high risk with my first, I already got one & get another one on July 5th to watch an issue... but if you have a normal pregnancy with my docs office you get your level 2 around 20 weeks and that's really it.

  • I won't have one until around 17 weeks unless something indicates I need one (bleeding, etc).

BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • I had a few earlier because of some issues but then with my first appt with my new OB at 8 weeks/3 days they did another one.  They have an in house machine and my OB did the US.

Its normal. It was like that with my first. I dont know where your from but here in my area there is a "Mother To Be" Spa and you can pay for an amazing ultrasound expierence and it has nothing to do with your doctor.

This is how both my doctors have been too. They have machines right in their office and it's no big deal for them to take a quick peek.

  • Usually an early ultrasound is only done when there are issues or the pregnancy is high risk.  Most people with normal pregnancies have one ultrasound around 18-20 weeks, and then that's it.  There are actually studies that say that the fewer ultrasounds, the better it is for the baby.

  • With our first we only had an US at 8 weeks because I was having a TON of cramping.  Otherwise, we would have had to wait until 20 weeks.  I am not having any problems this time so I imagine we will wait until 20 weeks for the first and probably only US.
  • I had one at my first appointment (at 6.5 weeks) to confirm the pregnancy was in the uterus and calculate the due date. The OB had a machine in the office and did the u/s herself. I'm glad I got one because it turned out I was a week behind where I thought I was. My cycle was always pretty regular but that's what they got based on the measurement. It would have been awkward to find that out at 18 weeks.

I think all doctors are different based on their equipment capabilities and policies but I understand it's still disappointing. I would have been upset if she hadn't done one. Actually she almost forgot, but I was ready to ask. I think it's a good practice at the beginning just to confirm the pregnancy is valid and get a due date.

  • With our first, we only had one u/s.  20 weeks.  I was really disappointed.

Then, I became one of those high risk pregnant ladies and have to have them all the time.  While it's great seeing the baby so much, I would give anything in the world to go back and be that woman who only got one.

  • I would have only gotten one at 18w too if I didn't have to get an anomaly scan at 6w. It's all my insurance would cover. They have an in house machine but I don't think that matters.

  • I haven't even been to the doctor yet. I have my first midwife appointment at 11 weeks. I'm hoping to be scheduled for my first U/S shortly after that but who knows!

  • We get to do u/s at 12 weeks, but only because we're doing the NT and genetic testing. Other than that, it's not done with my doc until 20 weeks. We did get to hear the heartbeat on the doppler at 10 weeks though.

  • First off, thank you to everyone responded! I had my first appointment with the doctor today. It went really well! We did opt for the NT scan at 12 weeks so in 4 weeks we'll be going to do that. I appreciate all the advice. My doctor perscriped me some Zofran today. I was very reliefed. I hate taking medication when I am pregnant, but she assured me that it was safe. It has been a life saver so far. I've only had it for about 8 hours. Lol! My nausea was getting the best of me. Every day. All day. I am getting excited, especially since we get to see the baby soon! Yay! I hope everyone is doing well! Thank you again!
