1st Trimester

Flying

Sorry for so many posts. So we where supposed

To go to Canada in the middle of July for vaca and when we told out doctor he said if it is not an important trip then he would not fly. I was really upset since we planned to go for couple months already. My husband agreed with him and now we are not going anymore. So I just don't understand why he would say it like that, when so many fly. He said why take any risks.

Thanx

Re: Flying

  • Are you flying from the States to Canada? If yes, that's not a long flight. I've never heard of a doctor advising a patient not to fly in the first two trimesters unless it was a high risk pregnancy.

  • I am flying across the country tomorrow, and my doctor told me it was perfectly safe.  I also read a few articles online that say the exact same thing, flying does not harm the baby at all....
  • I am flying mid-July and it looks like you and I are both 7 weeks along right now.  I haven't gotten clearance from my doctor yet (my appointment is this week) but there is virtually no way I can cancel my trip.  We have thousands of non-refundable dollars invested in our trip.  I really hope I don't get the same answer as you did. I am pretty nervous about not feeling well but from everything I read traveling in your 1st/2nd tri is suppose to be safe if you aren't having any complications.
  • I'm a flight attendant and this is my first pregnacy and I'm only 6 weeks but I've worked with girls who flew up to 8 months. So they were flying almost everyday and their doctors had no problem with it. As long as you can get up and move/walk to bathroom or something to stretch out if needed for long flight I'm not sure what the problem is.

  • That's why this whole thing upsets me! I mean yeah the trip

Is not mandatory , but come on we planned this trip and now it is important to just have this time alone before baby comes. He said it is up to

You, but why go if not mandatory. Since my husband is

So much into listening to doctor he said we are not going. Makes me really

Upset, bc I know so many people who traveled. I like the doctor , but I don't like this part!

  • I never heard anything about not being able to fly while being pregnant.  I can definitely hope I don't end up being a high risk because my husband and I are planning a trip to florida so we can go on our first real vacation before baby comes and cause I've never seen the ocean before.  I'm super excited!  I really hope your doctor is just feeding you a load of crap cause it'd be so wonderful for you to be able to go.

  • honestly, I wouldn't have even asked my doctor about flying that early in pregnancy.  As long as you aren't having any complications, I would go - just make sure you have travel insurance just in case...

  • I've already flown in my first trimester and my doctor said that it was no problem at all.  The only things she mentioned were to stay hydrated, get up every once in a while if it's a long flight and opt for the TSA patdown over the full body scanner at security because there isn't enough long term data on them yet.  I think you should get a second opinion on that.

  • Here's all I can really say - you need to sit down and have a conversation with your husband about how, as parents, you need to be willing and able to do your own research on some things and learn to challenge things that don't sit well with you.  Everyone on the planet has an opinion on everything, doctors included.  Your doctor is giving you his PERSONAL opinion rather than one based in medical research (which says that flying is perfectly safe in a healthy pregnancy).

This will come up often about vaccines, breast feeding, when to start solids, do purees or finger food, cry it out, when/how to potty train.  You need to start finding out what you as parents are comfortable with.  Ask your husband to start now, with this trip, and do research on what others in the medical community feel is safe.

  • I will talk to my hubby today and see where that will go. I mean I don't know why I didn't stand up for what I know about flying.

    Thank you

  • I'm not allowed to fly now because I was just diagnosed with Pre-E and I'm a preexisting type 1 diabetic. Before the Pre-E diagnosis, my doctor said it was fine to travel, just that I walk around a bit on the flight and preferably cut the trip from San Diego to Florida into 2 legs instead of one straight shot to give me come comfort time. If you're not having high blood pressure or have blood clotting issues/circulatory issues, I don't see the problem with flying as long as you and the baby are healthy!

I leave next week and am flying from the upper midwest to southern Mexico. My doctor has no problems with this. I have a layover and will get up and walk if needed during the flights and will make sure to drink plenty of water. Heck my doctor is ok with me spending 9 days in Mexico too (at an all inclusive). In short, I would suggest re-booking your flights and finding a new doctor fast!

  • Eh well, just because the doctor says not do it doesn't mean you can't. Seems like odd advice this early in pregnancy.

  • I would get a second opinion about flying.  I am not allowed to because I am high risk, but if you aren't having any problems I have only heard that you can't fly in your third trimester.
