Projectile vomit help needed

My 12 week old has had his share of issues which the Dr has now chalked up to colic.  We were on Neocate formula because of a suspected milk allergy and got the ok to switch to soy.  DS has been on the soy for over a week now and has started projectile vomiting probably every other day.  He's always been a puker but I'm worried that he may be having a reaction to the soy.   My question is at what point do I really start to worry about the projectile vomit? He's generally a happy baby now except for his gas issues because of the soy.  If its only once a day every other day would  you switch back to the Neocate (which is $40.00 for a 14 oz container) or continue on the soy?

Re: Projectile vomit help needed

  • Can you get your insurance to help with the special formula since there seems to be a medical need?  I'd hate to pay that much, but I also know I would hate to throw up every other day because of my food.  LO is doing a little projectile vomitting because he has had congestion and the mucous in his stomach isn't mixing well with the milk.

  • It could be a reaction to the soy or it could just be the reflux getting worse.  DS1 projectile vomited Neocate multiple times a day.

I would call and talk to your insurance company about Neocate, for DS1 one insurance company treated it like a prescription so it was $50 a month and our other insurance treated it as DME and it was our deductible than a precentage of the bill (it was 10% or 20%).  You may have to talk to your medical insurance department and your prescription department to figure out if you can get some coverage.

  • Unfortunately our insurance doesn't cover the formula.  Our pediatrician has been great with giving us samples and we can afford to buy the Neocate if we need to.  I just don't know if it's the reflux(which he is not on meds for anymore because those made him projectile puke a few times a day) a reaction to the soy or if I'm just feedi g him to much at a time.  I just want my baby boy to be happy and healthy and it's so stressful not knowing what the real problem is. He did also spit up a ton in the Neocate since its so thin and he would cry when he did spit up, now with the spy he doesn't even cry after the projectile puking.
