Cloth Diapering

$350 Worth of Orange Diapers! :( (laundry accident)

To make a long story short, a recently dyed Tshirt made its way into a load of BG elementals and now every inch of cotton is orange!! I tried running them through with a cup of bleach. No luck. I'm afraid to soak them in bleach water because I don't want to damage the PUL. Any ideas????

Re: $350 Worth of Orange Diapers! :( (laundry accident)

  • Call them "artisan hand dyed" Elementals when you go to resell them. ;o) Otherwise...meh, shouldn't hurt how they perform. Maybe try one of those dye magnet thingies they sell in the laundry aisle or sunning them lots (repeatedly) after washes. I think with repeated laundering the orange may fade anyways.

I know the orange is disconcerting for sure, but really, it could have been worse. Your diapers are still completely functional. I've seen ladies here lose entire stashes to machine grease and the like. In the grand scheme of things, this is a winner of a laundry accident. Don't know if that makes you feel any better. Probably not. :o)

  • I would just keep using them and sun them as much as possible. Eventually they will probably fade in colour.

Like pp said, it's unfortunate, but they're still useable!

  • Rit dye sells something that will take the dye out.
  • I did a google search and found this:

    1. As an alternative method, or for use on clothing that is not bleach-safe, soak the garment in hot water infused with green tea. After soaking for about 15 minutes, remove the garment, spread regular table salt on the dye transfer stain, and let stand for another 15 minutes. Wash as usual, but do not dry if the stain is not completely gone.
    2. As another alternative method, also for use on clothing that is not bleach-safe, wash your garment as you normally would (by itself), but instead of using regular detergent, use 1/4 of Boric Acid (Borax, found in the laundry aisle at most grocery stores).

  • Is oxyclean CD safe?  That also might work.

But as other posters have mentioned, the color will fade with time.  Once I had some diapers turn a little blue after a laundry incident and now I can't even tell which ones were affected :)

  • I used Carbonara color run when washing my son's baby clothes and a red shirt made them all pink. The Carbonara got 90% of the clothes back white! I got it at Hancock Fabrics.
