Nausea/Vomiting... help (pwease!!)

I posted this on the Jan 2013 board... but I'm desperate, so forgive the re-post!

Hi!  I'm due 1/11/2013... first pregnancy, first child, first grandchild for our parents.  I haven't had any of the "regular" pg symptoms - except for the nausea/vomiting... which seems to be making up 10000% for the lack of other symptoms.

I've tried Seabands, Preggo Pops, B6, "saltines by the bed", even recently Zofran - none of it works.  My last option is Phenergan - but it knocks me out - literally in 10 minutes, which pretty much rules out taking it at work, or anytime I might anticipate driving.

Has anyone had luck with ANYTHING else?  I'm doing the whole small meals, blander food, not laying down after eating thing.  I can keep enough water down to keep me out of the hospital, but after gaining 4 pounds in weeks 5-7, I'm back down to pre-preg weight, and I'm getting worried.  While I have become an expert ninja at throwing up (due to discretion at work), I'm reeeeeeally tired of the constant, rolling nausea.  My mouth never stops watering, the blood vessels over my eyes are broken... and I completely shattered my own record the other day - 14 times to throw up what feels like flaming battery acid.

I'll try anything - anyone have any suggestions??!?!?!?  I'm a healthy, non-smoking, gym-going 30 year old that can tolerate a lot.  But, Jesus Christ... something's GOT TO GIVE.

Thanks for letting me vent, Bumpies - any and all tips are much appreciated.  Hell, if you give me something that works - I'll send you a cookie bouquet :)

That sounds a little like hyperemesis. I'd mention it to your doctor.

  • Mint helps me. I have those lifesaver mint candies I eat when I feel really nauseous. Even smelling mint helps me, lol. Or carry around a bag of cheerios and eat them every once in a while -- might help, idk.  Good luck!!

  • We are not a replacement for a doctor or midwife's advice. So take all of this advice with a grain of salt (except the go to a doctor/midwife).

I'm not comfortable with taking medications even when I wasn't pregnant, and I'm even more adverse to it now. My morning sickness was really messing with me. I started making a bunch of homemade ice cream, which helps kill the nausea and if I do throw up it doesn't burn or bite as badly. Ginger also helps, and I've been cooking with it, drinking ginger ale, and eating caramelized ginger. Ginger's been shown to help with nausea. At work I've been sucking on peppermints, which mostly do the trick.

My m/s is definitely not as bad now. I definitely don't throw up as much. Maybe twice a week now? I also became a stealth vomiter at work. We have a set of planters with really bushy plants in them on the second floor balcony. I've puked in them more than once.

  • I'm curious about what replies you get as well.  I've been having problems with nausea all day today (just started today), and I'd like to hear what other more experienced moms have to say.

  • Ugh. It does feel never ending. Right now I feel like I live just to check off another day closer to this being OVER!

As far as help, like everyone said, go the physician and don't take anything without talking to him/her first.

That said, Unisom has helped me a little. I take that at night. The zofran doesn't do much for my nausea, but it does seem to stop incessant vomiting.

No matter what, I feel nauseated 100% of the time. It is physically and emotionally draining. I know many here take it in stride. I wish I had that stamina. This feels like the 5th circle of hell to me.

I hope you get relief soon.

  • I had god awful MS, it was so bad that I ended up in the hospital twice to get fluids because I was so dehydrated. The ONLY thing that helped me was Phenergan gel, I got a prescription for it and had to bring it to a compound pharmacy that mixed it.  It didnt knock me out and helped the nausea.

  • When I was pregnant with my son, I would set a pack of saltines and ginger ale on my night stand and every morning before I got out of bed, I would take a couple of crackers and sip on the ginger ale. Also, I would wait til I was about to leave the house to brush my teeth. Sounds gross, but it I rarely had morning sickness. Hope this helps!
  • Acupuncture was and is my lifesaver. I had m/s for 7 months during my last pregnancy then started acpuncture twice weekly and felt great. Now I am 8 weeks and started treatment at week 6 when the m/s started and my symptoms have drastically diminished.

  • Ugh, as an HG sufferer, I agree with others who said that sounds like HG. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Keep working with your doctors to try to get it under control.  You have some other options you can add/try in the alterntiave (unisom/B6, reglan, IV versions of the drugs, steriods in extreme cases... your doctor will be able to go over all the options). Do take it seriously and make sure your doctor is doing the same because the worse it gets the harder it is to get under control.  Visit the forums on helpher for more suggestions/support.

Also, try not to stress too much about your weight. I know its hard. I'm rather slight to start with and lost weight into my second tri last time beforeI was able to stablize and eventually gain some weight and my son turned out beautifully.  Just do the best you can, work with your doctor and remember it will eventually end. Good luck!
