wish us luck

I have an appointment today with our lactation consultant to figure out what's going on with the babies... they're not gaining much so we're going to have them feed and do a pre and post weight to see how much they get.  I feel like it's some big test and I'm so unprepared... my biggest fear is that she tells me they're not getting nearly enough and that I've been leaving my poor babies hungry all these weeks.

I'm a total wreck about it.... but I guess that it's better to know one way or the other and if they need more formula so be it.  I just wish I didn't have to go back to the hospital to see her... I think I'm going to be creeped out just being that near the NICU so soon after they were released.

Re: wish us luck

  • Good luck! I pumped my milk and knew how much the girls were taking, but they weren't gaining weight - and certainly were not going hungry. I started using Neosure and finally just switched all the way to that (I had issues with BF). I'm sure your babies are not going hungry!!!

  • good luck. I hope everything works out for you. I can't imagine how frustrating it is.

  • good luck! if you find out that you have a milk supply issue ask her to write you a rx for Domperidone...it is the milk wonder drug. i wish i had know about it earlier along.
  • Good luck!  I'm sure everything will be fine...but I remember being exactly in your shoes.  My boys were efficient eaters and we had to supplement.  At least you will know.  Keep us posted!

  • Well there is good and bad news...

The good news is that we now have a solid plan (thank goodness finally) and another follow up appointment and weight check on Friday.

The bad news is that my instinct was right and the babies aren't gaining enough or getting enough at their feedings.

The LC wants me to pump after every single feed and give them one extra ounce of ebm in a bottle at every feeding until they get to 6.5 pounds and then we'll re-evaluate.

I feel HORRIBLE that they weren't getting enough to eat and FURIOUS at my pediatrician for not giving us better advice or bringing us back in for follow up appointments when he found out that they weren't gaining well.  I just tell myself I can't change what we already did and thank goodness I called the LC to check things out.  I guess it just goes to show that you should go with your gut and call for help if things don't seem right.  I hope that they start gaining now that we have a plan!

    How big are your babies?

    Luck!

    How big are your babies?

They were each 4lbs 13 at birth and they're only 5lb 10 now... teeny tiny.  We are going to try to get them up to 6 quickly... the LC said that at 6.5 lbs they'll start getting much better at breastfeeding.  Let's hope!
