1st Trimester

How do you do it?

I have had nausea/vomiting since week 4.5 and now I am just 9 weeks.  I have missed worked, tried everything (at least what the doctors have told me) and then some to try and help.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job, so for me to miss a day, I have to be sick (I haven't missed a day in 2 years).  Anyway, nothing seems to be working.  I am a first time mom and I can't help but thinking, what if this was my second pregnancy?  How would I be handling a little one right now as well??? My husband is trying to be supportive, but is getting to the point where he is frustrated. The doctor's basically told me I need to do what I need to do to keep down liquids or I am going to end up in the hospital for dehydration.  Anyone have any uplifting advice??? I feel so out of control and I don't know what to do.

  • It definitely stinks to get through it! I'm sorry! What really helped for me, cliche as it is, was eating pickles. I got sick of only saltines, but for some reason, those pickles were amazing!

  • I tried Zofran but that alone did not help. Then I was given phenergen. I found that that alone also did not work. What did seem to help was taking phenergen in the later afternoon/night and the zofran during the day. I don't feel perfect but a hell of a lot better.

I was given both medications.  First phenergen and now zofran.  I will have to try that.  I am guessing this is safe? I also tried the b6 and unisom...nothing.

  • Zofran only works for me if I take it every 6-8 hours on schedule and not "as needed". Some have constipation from Zofran this way but I still have the opposite so it's not affecting me there.

  • Warm Ginerale, cranberry juice, Ice packs on the back on your neck, plain rice, lavender smelling hand soap/lotion, ice cubes and popsicles.

    Good Luck!

  • I was on phenergan with my first pregnancy, this time they prescribed me zofran and it's not working as well for me. I still got sick twice today =/ I will request phenergan again at my next appointment. Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry. I seem to always reply to these posts because I am right there with you! I've already been treated for dehydration, and that experience convinced me to take the meds. I too have some vomiting even with the zofran, but it seems to at least control it. NOTHING takes away the nausea. I do take the unisom at night. It seems to take the edge off and at least then I sleep for a few hours before waking up to throw up again.

Unfortunately, I have taken FMLA leave from work until I can get my vomiting under control. But I was working 12 hour rotating shifts in the hospital. Hopefully you will be able to manage most days, but don't be afraid to take time when you need it.

  • I have Hymperemisis, which is prob what you have as well. I have 3 kids at home (bio 4 year old, adopted 2.5 and adopted 9 months) and just found out 3 weeks ago I was pregnant (we were preventing so it was a surprise). I have been sick as a dog for the past 2 weeks...even on zofran. It hard. HARD. and hard. I am saying to myself over and over that this will not always be like this. Hang in there.
  • I haven't started with the nausea yet but my mother in law told me that chamomile tea helps A LOT!

Yes, I spoke to my doctor about this and he said it is perfectly fine and safe.  B6 did not work for me, in fact it did the opposite.
